Through an attractive, innovative, interdisciplinary and unique programme and the synergy of an academic and entrepreneurial spirit, the study programme attempts to meet the needs of a dynamic labour market, contribute to the strengthening of the  sector of educational activities, which must be the foundation of the development of a modern democratic knowledge-based society, and educate professional, independent, responsible and highly motivated scholars who will contribute to the development of the science of pedagogy and participate in the further development of educational sciences. The postgraduate (doctoral) study programme in Pedagogy is based on competitive scientific research and competences required for the development of a knowledge-based society. The proposed study programme is unique and original at the national level and as such is based on the following fundamental ideas: 1) Pedagogy as a social science is predominantly oriented towards scientific research of education, the school system and the national curriculum and is at the same time one of the national strategic priorities of the Republic of Croatia; 2) The contemporary science of pedagogy is nowadays one of the most dynamic areas of science, both in terms of the productivity of scientific research and its share in the social research funding; 3) The innovative nature of the study programme is reflected in its curriculum, which is rich in terms of content and topics, contemporary in terms of its organisational structure, methodically diverse, and based on constant and rapid changes in the world of open sciences; 4) The postgraduate (doctoral) study programme in Pedagogy follows the concept of similar study programmes in the world, but at the same time fosters the qualities specific to the Croatian pedagogy tradition; 5) The study programme aims at reflecting modern and interdisciplinary scientific considerations of pedagogical phenomena as well as encouraging students to find their own individual paths within the framework of personal, professional and scientific reflections, interests, motives and practices which will lead to the selection of their theses, the preparation and the resulting defence of their doctoral dissertations. One of the key prerequisites for raising the quality of the teaching process at the Faculty is to achieve a balanced increase in the number of qualified and competent teachers with academic degrees, which implies that there is an imperative need for the interweaving of the teaching process and other activities carried out at the Faculty, above all, scientific research and professional work. The analysis of the content and structure of comparable postgraduate (doctoral) study programmes and organisations has shown that there is a strong focus on the theoretical and methodological study and research of primary, secondary and tertiary education levels within the related areas and topics in pedagogy. Students are offered an in-depth study of the social, historical and cultural context of the problem areas of contemporary education and socialisation. The methodology and the content of the curriculum are based on a holistic approach to education that provides opportunities for the realisation of the principles of ecological analysis, integration, complementarity and critical evaluation of dynamic global and local trends in contemporary education.
