Project Leader:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Assoc. Prof. DOMAGOJ TOMAS, PhD, has focused in his work to date on modern and contemporary national history within a broader European context, with particular emphasis on intellectual history, Church-state relations, Croatian-Hungarian relations, Croatian emigration, and the local history of the city of Osijek. His experience with theoretical and methodological approaches to intellectual history will contribute to various individual research topics as well as to the overall understanding of knowledge transfer and cultural exchange between Croatia and Europe. As project leader, he will also monitor, encourage and coordinate the work of the other collaborators within the project research group.<\/p>\n

Assoc. Prof. DENIS NJARI, PhD, will continue within the project his many years of research into the history of Hungarians in eastern Croatia, with particular emphasis on the period from the late Middle Ages to the beginning of the modern era. He has previously worked actively on collecting and preparing sources for the study of this topic, and he brings to the research group expertise in the analysis of pre-modern Latin sources, as well as fluency in Hungarian, enabling him to work with original material in both languages and to cooperate with colleagues and institutions from Hungary and the wider region.<\/p>\n

Assoc. Prof. AN\u0110ELKO VLA\u0160I\u0106, PhD, researches the early modern period, particularly the 16th and 17th centuries, and within this period examines various aspects of cultural exchange between the \u201cCroatian lands\u201d under Ottoman rule and neighbouring provinces within the Ottoman Empire in Southeast Europe. He also researches cultural exchange between the \u201cCroatian lands\u201d under Ottoman rule and neighbouring cross-border provinces within the Habsburg Monarchy, including Croatian, Hungarian and Austrian lands. He has worked with various narrative sources and has devoted particular attention to the travelogue of the Ottoman traveller Evliya \u00c7elebi, who described his journeys through numerous provinces of the Ottoman Empire in Southeast Europe, including the \u201cCroatian lands\u201d, Hungary and the Austrian provinces.<\/p>\n

Assoc. Prof. SLA\u0110ANA JOSIPOVI\u0106 BATOREK, PhD, is the author of several scholarly papers in the field of national history of the second half of the 20th century, with particular research interests in Church-state relations, cultural policy, the media and everyday life. As a researcher, she participated in the international GIP project \u201cTraces of German Language, Literature and Culture in Croatia\u201d and in the one-year internal project of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences \u201cSocieties and Diseases \u2013 Responses to Health Crises in Modern and Contemporary History\u201d. Her participation in this project will focus on research into Church-state relations during socialist Yugoslavia within the broader context of communication between the Holy See and the states of the Eastern Bloc.<\/p>\n

Assoc. Prof. MELITA ALEKSA VARGA, PhD, possesses highly relevant expertise for the project\u2019s research into representations of Croatian society, values and marginalised groups through Croatian proverbs. Since 2022, she has been Editor-in-Chief of Proverbium<\/em>, the world\u2019s leading scholarly journal on proverbs, which was indexed in the international Scopus database in 2024. She is also editor of the thematic series Proverbium<\/em> Online<\/em> Supplement<\/em>, in which she has published four books by prominent international paremiologists. Her contribution to the project concerns the study of representations and the status of marginalised social groups through proverbs from the 12th to the 19th century, as well as the analysis of changes in the social values of Croatian society in correlation with European proverbs from the same period.<\/p>\n

Assoc. Prof. IVANA JOZI\u0106, PhD, focuses in her scholarly work on text linguistics, semiotics and sociolinguistics, as demonstrated by a large number of publications recognised by both the specialised and broader national and international academic community. Her particular research interest within the project is focused on the linguistic and semiotic analysis of advertisements and other notices published in old German-language newspapers from Osijek, Slavonische Presse<\/em> and Die Drau<\/em>, which were published in Osijek in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Within the project, the analysis will be conducted from a socio-historical perspective, taking into account the role of language and other semiotic systems in communicating cultural and social values through advertisements.<\/p>\n

Asst. Prof. ZLATKO \u0110UKI\u0106, PhD, has focused in his previous work on topics from ancient history, with particular emphasis on the history of agriculture and the history of navigation. Within this project, he will analyse influences from other parts of Europe on the development of agriculture and navigation in the \u201cCroatian lands\u201d during antiquity.<\/p>\n

Asst. Prof. DANIJEL JELA\u0160, PhD, will focus his primary research interest within the project on residents of Osijek of foreign origin, i.e. individuals born outside Osijek and the Kingdom of Slavonia, with particular emphasis on the 19th century. The aim of his research is to establish relevant historical facts that would contribute to a better understanding of the role of immigrants in Osijek during the period in question. The focus will be on individuals who acquired civic status and those who participated in city administration, examining their number, their share of the general population or municipal government bodies, their occupations, origins, etc. Historical-demographic data will also be placed within the broader context of the administrative and social history of Osijek during the period concerned.<\/p>\n

Asst. Prof. IGOR JOSIPOVI\u0106, PhD, researches topics in modern and contemporary Croatian and world history, with particular emphasis on the history of the prison system in the 19th century. He brings to the research group a range of competences, including in-depth knowledge of the development of penal and prison systems in Croatia, with particular emphasis on influences from Central Europe (Vienna, Hungary) and their adaptation to local circumstances.<\/p>\n

Asst. Prof. SANJA CIMER KARAICA, PhD, is a German studies scholar with many years of experience researching translation in the context of Croatian-German cultural relations. She has published numerous scholarly and professional articles on this topic in various journals and conference proceedings and has presented papers at many national and international academic conferences. Her contribution to the project will consist of analysing the transfer of ideas and cultural exchange between the German- and Croatian-speaking areas in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, based on an analysis of the circulation of translations and translated literature from one linguistic area to the other.<\/p>\n

Asst. Prof. LUKA PEJI\u0106, PhD, is the author of several scholarly papers dealing with the social history of the 19th century, while his specific research interests include the history of marginal social groups, crime and the labour movement at the turn of the 20th century. In addition, he translates historiographical works from English and translated into Croatian the book Bandits<\/em> by British historian Eric Hobsbawm. He was the head of the research project \u201cSocieties and Diseases: Responses to Health Crises in Modern and Contemporary History\u201d (2022 \u2013 2023), and within this project he will analyse ideological concepts present in the labour movement in Croatia in the late 19th century.<\/p>\n

SERGEJ FILIPOVI\u0106, PhD, focuses primarily in his scholarly work on topics relating to the history of schooling and education in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During this period, educational ideas from Central Europe reached the \u201cCroatian lands\u201d, and after 1918 ideas also arrived from Serbia. Given his previous scholarly work and competences related to comparative research, he will contribute to the project as a researcher, since the project deals with the transfer of ideas and cultural exchange, which is closely connected to the history of Croatian education in the 19th and 20th centuries.<\/p>\n

HRVOJE POTLIMBRZOVI\u0106, PhD, has previously focused on research into the Croatian logical heritage of the 19th and 20th centuries and the history of interdisciplinarity in Croatia. He was a collaborator at the Institute of Philosophy in Zagreb within the international Ueberweg project on the history of 19th-century philosophy. Within the project, he will focus on the transfer of ideas and cultural exchange between Croatian and European thinkers and on their assessments of one another.<\/p>\n

Asst. Prof. DEMIAN PAPO, PhD, focuses primarily in his research on the late medieval (Renaissance) Croatian philosophical heritage of the 15th and 16th centuries, while his other research interests include historical-philosophical studies of contemporary scientific paradigms, especially interdisciplinarity, within the European context. He was the leader of the one-year internal research project of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek Ivan Stojkovi\u0107\u2019s Speech <\/em>Erit tibi gloria (1424): A Milestone of the Croatian Philosophical Tradition and the First Attempt to Establish an<\/em> Educational Institution<\/em> in<\/em> Dubrovnik<\/em>. Within the project, he will research the mutual exchange of ideas and culture between Croatian philosophers and their European contemporaries.<\/p>\n

IVAN FREMEC intends within the project to research the area of southern Pannonia, i.e. the region between the Sava, Drava and Danube rivers, during the period from the 1st century BC to the 5th century AD. The concepts he intends to examine include the origin, status and social mobility of slaves and freedmen in Pannonia in relation to Italy and other European provinces, religious syncretism of local and Roman deities (interpretatio<\/em> Romana<\/em>) and of pagan and Christian elements in later periods, anthroponymic changes on epigraphic monuments, hybrid identities on the periphery of the Roman world, coinage as a means of spreading cultural influence, and other related topics.<\/p>\n

PETRA PLANTOSAR is employed as an Assistant at the Catholic Faculty of Theology in \u0110akovo and also works as an External Associate at the Department of History of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek. At the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb, she defended her doctoral dissertation proposal entitled \u201cChurch Institutions and Economic Indicators in the Territory of the Diocese of P\u00e9cs according to the Accounts of the Extraordinary Papal Tithe of 1332 \u2013 1335\u201d, and the defence of her doctoral dissertation is expected during the project period. Her research focuses on the medieval history of the lower interfluve of the Drava, Sava and Danube rivers, medieval hagiography, and everyday life in the European Middle Ages.<\/p>\n
