Evaluative linguistic constructions can be defined as morphologically marked units that contain and convey a certain degree of speaker subjectivity, reflecting the speaker\u2019s personal attitudes and opinions. Evaluative constructions encompass a range of word-formation strategies whose pragmatic-semantic function is to express a quantitative and\/or qualitative evaluation of the referent. The subject of research within this project is evaluative linguistic units \u2013 diminutives and augmentatives in the Croatian language \u2013 considered from their morphological, semantic and pragmatic perspectives. Since comprehensive descriptions of word formation in Croatian are sporadic, the aim of this research is to provide a comprehensive corpus-based description of the formation of diminutives and augmentatives in Croatian, conduct a diachronic word-formation and semantic analysis, and establish an inventory of word-formation units, processes and rules involved in their formation. The project also aims to identify new meanings of diminutives and augmentatives, as well as extensions or restrictions of existing meanings, determine changes in the connotations and usage characteristics of diminutives and augmentatives and the morphemes used to form them, and describe the semantic-pragmatic status of diminutives and augmentatives in the Croatian language.<\/p>\n

The value and innovative character of this project lie primarily in its comprehensive approach to the description of diminutives and augmentatives in the Croatian language, which has not previously been undertaken. In addition to its scholarly value, the research also has documentary value due to its corpus-based approach. The corpus and the results of the analysis will therefore constitute a unique repository of knowledge about speakers of Croatian and their way of life in accordance with the spirit of their time.<\/p>\n

The project objectives related to the proposed research are:<\/p>\n

  1. to describe the formation of diminutives and augmentatives in the Croatian language on the basis of a corpus<\/li>\n
  2. to conduct a diachronic word-formation and semantic analysis of diminutives and augmentatives<\/li>\n
  3. to establish a preliminary inventory of word-formation units, processes and rules involved in the formation of diminutives and augmentatives<\/li>\n
  4. to identify new meanings of diminutives, augmentatives and the morphological units used in their formation, as well as extensions or restrictions of existing meanings<\/li>\n
  5. to identify changes in the connotations, usage characteristics, frequency and productivity of individual diminutives and augmentatives and the morphemes used in their formation<\/li>\n
