On 7 May 2026, first-year MA students attended an off-site class at the media centre in Bilje as part of the course “Introduction to Multimedia”.<\/p>\n

During the visit, they toured the institution and gained insight into the functioning of Hungarian-language media in Croatia, learned about the challenges of editorial and journalistic work, and became familiar with the process of producing studio recordings. During the interactive session, they had the opportunity to practise interview situations, ask questions and prepare introductions, which also helped them prepare for their professional practice scheduled for the following academic year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We would also like to thank the editorial staff and M\u00f3nika Moln\u00e1r for their support and contribution to the successful implementation of the programme.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/header>\n

GUEST LECTURERS<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

In April 2026, lecturers from the University of P\u00e9cs visited our Chair and worked with graduate students.<\/p>\n

\u00c9va Kata Szederk\u00e9nyi involved the students in a workshop on developing skills for entering the labour market and methods of self-communication. Through individual and pair work, the students practised assertive communication techniques, building a positive personal brand and focusing on their strengths. Szederk\u00e9nyi would also like to thank the students for their openness and cooperation and hopes that, after completing their graduate studies, they will find excellent teaching positions and supportive professional communities.<\/p>\n

Bene Adri\u00e1n, Associate Professor at the University of P\u00e9cs, provided students with an insight into contemporary Hungarian literary periodical culture through an interactive workshop, analysing the characteristics of print and digital literary journals. Based on student activities, the structural and media-related characteristics of individual journals and online portals were compared. In his lecture on pedagogy, he presented the potential of popular culture for developing skills through the example of alternative-history comics, which can be used to strengthen students’ critical thinking, media literacy and responsible citizenship competencies in an engaging way.<\/p>\n

Guest Lecture “Multilingualism in the European Union \u2013 Translators’ Experiences” Held<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n
\n

On 26 January 2024, from 9:45 to 11:15, Professor and translator Claudia \u00d6lbei gave a guest lecture as part of the elective course Consecutive Interpreting<\/em>, taught in the second year of the Graduate Study Programme in Hungarian Language and Literature. She worked as a translator at the European Parliament for ten years and has been working at the European Court in Strasbourg since 2014. In her interactive lecture entitled Multilingualism in the European Union \u2013 Translators’ Experiences<\/em><\/strong>, she provided a concise overview of the history of the multilingual European Union, with particular emphasis on the work of the European Court, highlighting the complex process of language mediation among the 24 official languages. The second part of the session consisted of a workshop with active student participation. In addition to learning about various theoretical models of the interpreting process, students had the opportunity to apply appropriate interpreting strategies and procedures between Hungarian and Croatian in accordance with the intended learning outcomes of the course.<\/p>\n

Balkan Garden in Balok\u00e1ny<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Yesterday, 29 September, the event entitled “Balk\u00e1nkert a Balok\u00e1nyban\/Balkan Garden in Balok\u00e1ny” opened with the aim of introducing interested visitors to the mentality, art, culture, music and sports of the Balkan peoples, as well as presenting the position of Hungarians and other nationalities from the region.<\/p>\n

The first event featured an exhibition by the Baranya County Archives of the Hungarian National Archives entitled “P\u00e9cs\u2013Osijek: 50 Years of Twin Cities \u2013 Images and Stories from the Past of Two Twin Cities”, opened by Dr Zolt\u00e1n G\u0151zsy, Director of the Archives and Professor at the Institute of History of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of P\u00e9cs. This was followed by a presentation by historian Dr Szabolcs Varga entitled “Dependent on One Another: Osijek and P\u00e9cs\/Esz\u00e9k \u00e9s P\u00e9cs”. Dr Ana Lehocki-Samard\u017ei\u0107, Head of our Chair and the Glotta Institute for Language, also attended the event and shared her experiences regarding the position of the Hungarian minority in Croatia.<\/p>\n

FIELD CLASSES FOR STUDENTS OF HUNGARIAN LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE<\/strong><\/p>\n

“LANGUAGE MEDIATION AND COMMUNICATION IN SITU”<\/strong><\/p>\n

On 8 and 9 June 2023, first-year students of the Graduate Study Programme in Hungarian Language participated in field classes related to the course Specialised Translation, taught by Associate Professor Ana Lehocki-Samard\u017ei\u0107. The trip to Budapest was designed as an extension of classroom activities in order to give students an insight into what they can expect from the translation profession, what the work of a translator looks like in real-life circumstances, and how it relates to the tasks performed by communication specialists and language mediators in general. Since the learning outcomes of the Graduate Study Programme in Hungarian Language can be divided into two thematic groups (translation and communication), the activities were selected so that each would address a translation competence while also relating to one of the learning outcomes of the study programme, thereby maximising the effectiveness of the field trip.<\/p>\n

The first day of the field classes, the so-called communication day<\/em>, focused on educating students in the field of communication studies. Renata Forjan, an alumna of our Faculty who runs her own translation business as well as a services and tourism business, joined the activities and held a workshop introducing students to Budapest. Based on assigned tasks, the students independently discovered interesting facts and sights in Budapest. Forjan also incorporated translation tasks into all activities. Although the weather was not favourable, we had the opportunity to visit most of the planned sights.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The programme on the first day also included a visit to the Museum of Ethnography, which was likewise connected with communication and translation topics and offered students multiple benefits. Cultural competence is one of the competencies required of translators, and students learn not only the Hungarian language but also traditional and modern Hungarian culture. This was why this particular museum was selected. There, we visited the exhibition entitled ZOOM, whose central idea is the changing perspective in the work of ethnographic museums and museums in general. During the visit, students completed tasks assigned by the curator, learning how to use objects that were once part of everyday life and gaining a tangible insight into life in the past. We concluded the day by exploring the city’s Art Nouveau district and attending a workshop on the operation of translation companies and businesses in Croatia, led by Renata Forjan and Ana Lehocki-Samard\u017ei\u0107.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The second day, the so-called translation day<\/em>, included a visit to the Hungarian Office for Translation and Attestation Ltd. (OFFI) in Budapest. The heads of the company’s main departments welcomed us with an extensive programme. Our Faculty has signed a Cooperation Agreement with the company and has two internship placements there each year. Szilvia Szot\u00e1k, Head of the Language Editing Department, spoke about the beginnings of the Office, which has operated continuously for 154 years, its mentoring and internship programmes, and the results of its work to date. This was followed by lectures by Annam\u00e1ria Novakov (Head of the Quality Assurance Office) on the organisation and operation of the company and by D\u00f3ra M\u00e1ria Tam\u00e1s (Head of the Terminology Office) on the company’s terminology work and the development of terminology databases that support translators both in traditional translation work and when using CAT tools. After a short quiz on what they had learned, in which students won valuable prizes, Edina Pol\u00e1cska (Head of the CAT Tools Office) gave a lecture and workshop on the use of CAT tools. This particularly impressed the students, as very little time remains during regular classes for translation using CAT tools.<\/p>\n

Young translators and students at the beginning of their studies first learn to work using traditional methods in order to understand why certain issues in the translation process require particular attention. Therefore, 15 weeks of Specialised Translation classes are far from sufficient to also become thoroughly familiar with CAT tools. Following the CAT tools session, students participated in a WORDCAFFE activity, where they received guidelines on what makes a good translator, what makes a good interpreter<\/em> and what makes a good translation<\/em>. The workshop part of the visit concluded with a Croatian translation exercise involving a Certificate of No Criminal Record<\/em>, as an example of a fixed-format document that had not been translated during classes. At the end of the day, we visited the Customer Service Office of the Hungarian Office for Translation and Attestation Ltd. (OFFI), where students saw in situ<\/em> how a document is submitted for translation and processed before being sent to a translator. They also received basic information from practising translators about working at OFFI, which is organised as a joint-stock company and therefore operates with a profit-oriented business model while simultaneously complying with the rules governing state-owned companies, an exceptionally demanding task.<\/p>\n

Panel Discussion <\/strong>Minority Literature and Hungarian Authors in Croatia<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

On 31 May at 6 p.m., the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek hosted the panel discussion Minority Literature and Hungarian Authors in Croatia<\/em> as part of the FUZ&JA (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in the Community \u2013 Me Too) project, a science popularisation project of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek. The guests were Ferenc Kontra, an award-winning writer and recipient of numerous awards (Magyarorsz\u00e1g bab\u00e9rkoszor\u00faja, J\u00f3zsef Attila d\u00edj, M\u00e1rai S\u00e1ndor d\u00edj, etc.); Full Professor \u00c9va Toldi, literary historian, critic and Head of the Department of Hungarian Studies in Novi Sad; and Associate Professor Ana Lehocki-Samard\u017ei\u0107, Head of the Chair of Hungarian Language and Literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek, who participated in the panel in her capacity as a writer and poet. The discussion was moderated by Gabriela Dobsai, PhD, and \u00c1d\u00e1m Walk\u00f3, PhD, lecturers at the Chair of Hungarian Language and Literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek.<\/p>\n

The main topics of the panel were minority literature, Hungarian literature and Hungarian authors in Croatia, bilingualism in literature and culture, as well as transculturalism, its possibilities, influence and presence in literature.<\/p>\n

The panel discussion Minority Literature and Hungarian Authors in Croatia<\/em>, organised as part of the FUZ&JA project, provided insight into the development, challenges, advantages and future of minority literature in general and in our region, while also opening opportunities for cooperation between literary historians and writers.<\/p>\n

Students of the Chair of Hungarian Language and Literature Actively Participated in Jewish Culture Month Programmes<\/strong><\/p>\n

This year, students of the Chair of Hungarian Language and Literature once again actively participated in programmes held on 17 and 18 September 2022 as part of Jewish Culture Month. A workshop was held at the Stara Pekara venue in Osijek’s Tvr\u0111a district, where Ante Kati\u0107 and Tea Pu\u0161elji\u0107 performed Szekler dances. Participants had an opportunity to learn dances of all national minorities living and active in the City of Osijek, including Hebrew, German, Macedonian, Serbian, Ruthenian and other dances. The primary aim of the workshop was to bring together members of different minorities and, through traditional and popular dances, contribute to intercultural dialogue among them.<\/p>\n

At the table tennis tournament for members of national minorities, our Chair was represented by Leon Mari\u0107, who achieved an excellent fourth place. We congratulate him on his achievement!<\/p>\n

On Saturday, a chess tournament for national minorities was held, in which Nera Kova\u010d, a first-year graduate student at the Chair of Hungarian Language and Literature, participated.<\/p>\n

28th International Conference Multimedia in Education<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

On 6 and 7 July, the 28th International Conference Multimedia in Education<\/em> was held, organised by the Chair of Hungarian Language and Literature of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek, and the Multimedia in Education Section of the J\u00e1nos Neumann Informatics Society from Hungary. This year’s host was the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek. To date, almost 1,500 presentations involving around 1,800 authors have been delivered at the annual Multimedia in Education<\/em> conferences, which have attracted more than 3,000 participants. The aim of the professional conference is to encourage communication between Hungarian and international experts working in the fields of education, educational research and development. Plenary lectures were delivered by Nandor \u010capo, Director of the Directorate for National Minorities, and Associate Professor Ana Lehocki-Samard\u017ei\u0107. These were followed by presentations in Hungarian and English covering, among other topics, corporate education and competency development, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in education, teaching drone technology, learning experiences in the 21st century, multimedia in music education, space exploration and space activities in contemporary education, and technological changes in learning environments. The Awards Committee of the Multimedia in Education Section of the J\u00e1nos Neumann Informatics Society presented Ana Lehocki-Samard\u017ei\u0107, Head of the Chair of Hungarian Language and Literature in Osijek, with the Ring for Multimedia in Education Award. We congratulate her on this achievement! As part of the conference, the volume A horv\u00e1torsz\u00e1gi magyars\u00e1g a 21. sz\u00e1zadban (The Hungarian Community in Croatia in the 21st Century)<\/em> was presented, accompanied by a cultural programme featuring music, dance and a dramatic performance. The volume was presented by J\u00e1nos Pusztay, editor of the Magyar Szemhat\u00e1r<\/em> series (Hungarian Horizons<\/em>), and Ana Lehocki-Samard\u017ei\u0107, editor of the volume on the Hungarian community in Croatia.<\/p>\n

During the second day, participants had the opportunity to expand their knowledge of successful communication in the virtual world by taking part in Monika Molnar’s workshop entitled Interactivity in Online Teaching \u2013 Tools, Programmes, Possibilities<\/em>, and they also had an opportunity to try operating drones. The conference concluded with a visit to the Hungarian community in Vukovar. The organisers once again thank Rozalija Jakumetovi\u0107, President of the Association of Hungarians of the City of Vukovar, and Vinka Margita Kova\u010d, Vice-President of the Association of Hungarians of the City of Vukovar, for their warm welcome!<\/p>\n

Presentation of the Publication The Hungarian Minority in Croatia in the 21st Century<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

On 5 April in Budapest, the publication entitled The Hungarian Minority in Croatia in the 21st Century<\/em> was presented as part of the Magyar Szemhat\u00e1r\/Hungarian Horizons<\/em> series. The book was presented by Full Professor J\u00e1nos Pusztay, editor of the series, and Full Professor Dinko \u0160ok\u010devi\u0107, one of the reviewers. Assistant Professor Ana Lehocki-Samard\u017ei\u0107, editor of the publication, spoke about how the work came into being, its content and authors, as well as the significance of the publication for the Hungarian minority. The Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia to Hungary, Mladen Andrli\u0107, PhD, also attended the presentation. The aim of the publication is to present the exceptionally rich linguistic, cultural and historical heritage of the Hungarian community in Croatia.<\/p>\n
