History and general information<\/p>\n
The tradition of higher education in Osijek dates back to the 18th century, when the Franciscan order founded Studium Philosophicum Essekini (1707-1780) and Studium Theologicum Essekini (1724-1783). These were the foundations upon which the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek was established.<\/p>\n
The history of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek was marked by three important events: the founding of the Teacher Training Academy in 1961-1962, followed by the transformation of the Academy in the Faculty of Education in 1977-1978 and its subsequent transformation in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in 2003-2004. In the course of its academic work the Faculty of Education developed into a research and teaching institution with nine graduate study programmes in the humanities, social and natural sciences, and arts.<\/p>\n
The last two decades were marked by various changes within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and its predecessor, the Faculty of Education. Firstly, the Faculty of Teacher Education and the Preschool Education Studies separated from the then Faculty of Education (1997), followed by a gradual disaffiliation of the Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Chemistry studies, which became independent organisational units of the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University. On 10 February 2004, the Faculty of Education changed its name to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek. A wide variety of study programmes at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels, as well as programmes in the area of lifelong learning facilitate fostering of interdisciplinarity between the humanities and social sciences, but also within these fields. The activities of the Faculty are very flexible in adapting to new requirements and frequent changes in the higher education system.<\/p>\n
