On Thursday, 16 April 2026, first-year students of the undergraduate single-major and double-major study programmes in Croatian Language and Literature<\/em> attended the presentation of a medal marking the 1100th anniversary of the Croatian Kingdom, held at the Museum of Fine Arts in Osijek. The presentation was attended by students enrolled in the elective course Slavonic Scripts<\/em>, taught by Assistant Professor Vera Bla\u017eevi\u0107 Krezi\u0107, PhD, from the Chair of Croatian Language History and Croatian Dialectology.<\/p>\n

The participants were warmly welcomed by Eduard Hudolin, Director of the Museum of Fine Arts. The programme was hosted by Anja Kindl, curator at the Museum of Fine Arts. The medal was created by Karlo Gross, an academic sculptor and medallist. The exhibition was dedicated to the 1100th anniversary of the Croatian Kingdom and to issues concerning academic artists working in the field of medal-making. The introductory address was given by Eduard Hudolin, Director of the Museum of Fine Arts. He announced upcoming projects and expressed his gratitude for the cooperation with the County, which is also the founder of the Museum, and with the State Archives in Osijek. Nata\u0161a Trami\u0161ak, Prefect of Osijek-Baranja County, emphasised that the County had contributed both to the presentation and to the commemoration of the important 1100th anniversary of the Croatian Kingdom. This contribution was made at the cultural and artistic levels, with various events held throughout Croatia. The medal was originally created for preservation in the Museum\u2019s collection, but 50 copies were also minted for presentation as gifts. The first medal was presented to the Croatian Consulate in New York, while the second was presented to the Croatian church in New York. Assistant Professor Daniel Zec, PhD, from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek emphasised the great importance of the medal for Croatian history and the Croatian language, as well as the challenges facing medal-making, an artistic discipline that is, hyperbolically speaking, on the verge of extinction. He also highlighted three key factors necessary for a medal to be created: the commissioner, the medal\u2019s creator and a small circle of medal enthusiasts. He further emphasised the medal\u2019s distinctive conciseness and compactness, noting that Karlo Gross refers to three key years: 2025, 1925 and 925. He considers the medal to be the most authentic representation of King Tomislav, depicting him as a silhouette because the available information about him is scarce and unreliable. At the end of the presentation, Karlo Gross explained that creating the medal had been difficult because of the subject matter and the lack of reliable evidence. He also noted that there are approximately twenty other outstanding medallists in Croatia, but they rarely have opportunities to produce medals because the commissioner is an essential factor. He reflected on the distinctive purpose of the medal: promoting the Republic of Croatia, Croatian history and the Croatian arts of sculpture and medal-making.<\/p>\n

The medal features a golden Croatian checkerboard in the background and silver silhouettes, and it has an obverse and a reverse. The obverse depicts King Tomislav\u2019s crown with the inscription \u201c1100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CROATIAN KINGDOM\u201d and the years 925 and 2025, while the reverse features his silhouette and the inscription \u201cKING TOMISLAV \u2013 THE FIRST CROATIAN KING\u201d. The silhouette of King Tomislav was inspired by the statue of King Tomislav, the most monumental work of the academic sculptor Robert Frange\u0161 Mihanovi\u0107, located in front of Zagreb Central Station. King Tomislav\u2019s crown is based on a motif found on an eleventh-century early Croatian relief depicting a medieval Croatian ruler, discovered in the Cathedral of Saint Domnius in Split. These topics form part of the course content studied within Old Church Slavonic 2<\/em> and Slavonic Scripts<\/em>. The medal is distinctive because of its interesting relief texture and its simple yet powerful visual language, which draws on recognisable Croatian motifs.<\/p>\n

Attending the medal presentation undoubtedly encouraged our students to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of Croatian history and its connection with the history of the Croatian language, particularly the fact that the 1100th anniversary of the Croatian Kingdom also marks the anniversary of the earliest documented reference to the Croatian Glagolitic tradition: the letters sent by Pope John X to Tomislav, King of the Croats, Mihajlo, Prince of Hum, Archbishop John of Split, all bishops and the entire people.<\/p>\n
