The volume was presented by its editor Luka Pejić and contributing authors Slađana Josipović Batorek and Damir Sekulić. The discussion was moderated by doctoral student Franka Maslov.

Editor Luka Pejić pointed out that the motivation behind the volume was to encourage interdisciplinary dialogue among scholars. He recalled that the volume was the result of work on a scientific project of the same name, which began in the autumn of 2022, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of the volume was not to provide a detailed analysis of the epidemiological causes of a particular health crisis, but rather to examine, for example, the mechanisms authorities have historically used to contain crises, various forms of resistance to new health policies, the (in)effectiveness of particular political systems under such circumstances, and similar issues. Although most of the papers in the volume deal with examples related to Croatia, they do not treat them in isolation, but rather as part of broader European and global processes. During the discussion, it was emphasised that health crises are always multidimensional. They are never merely medical phenomena, but also involve a range of political, social, cultural, educational, legal and communication challenges. For this very reason, it was important for the volume to include authors from different disciplines and with diverse research interests — from history and philosophy to pedagogy and linguistics. The importance of historical experience as a tool for better understanding and managing contemporary crises was also emphasised. Certain continuities were highlighted. Although contemporary dilemmas may appear entirely new, work on this volume has shown that many of these issues have a long history. Debates about vaccination, resistance to new epidemiological measures, fear of state surveillance, distrust of authorities and media sensationalism are all themes that also appeared during earlier health crises, albeit in different forms. In addition, the participants agreed that every social crisis represents a kind of test of social cohesion and solidarity, and that successful crisis management is not merely a matter of responding when a particular problem arises, but also of long-term investment in healthcare infrastructure, education and public communication.

Pejić added that health crises are not anomalies, but an integral part of human history. For this very reason, studying them historically has tangible contemporary value. Referring to author Sabrina Sholts and her book The Human Disease, he stated that the coronavirus pandemic will evidently not be the last, because what makes us vulnerable to pandemics is also what makes us human. Historian Slađana Josipović Batorek discussed her own research on the 1972 smallpox epidemic in Yugoslavia, pointing to the initial difficulties as well as the effective measures that led to the rapid containment of the outbreak. She paid particular attention to the role of the media and the issue of public perception of the epidemic. Finally, philosopher Damir Sekulić spoke about the COVID-19 pandemic as a social phenomenon that exposed and deepened existing inequalities and changed the way we think about touch, freedom and responsibility. In conclusion, the presentation emphasised that health crises act as a mirror of society, revealing its weaknesses and existing social tensions, but also its potential for change.

Text: Luka Pejić

Photographs: Danijel Jelaš

On 27 March 2026, the edited volume Društva i bolesti: odgovori na zdravstvene krize u modernoj i suvremenoj povijesti was presented at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek.
