Guest Lecture by Professor Keith Gehring
On Wednesday, 27 May 2026, Dr Keith Gehring, Professor at the Josef Korbel School of Global and Public Affairs, University of Denver, and Fulbright Scholar at the University of Belgrade, visited the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek. He presented International Futures (IF), a free open-source forecasting platform developed at the Frederick S. Pardee Institute for International Futures at the University of Denver. IF projects economic, demographic, health, governance and environmental trends for 188 countries and is used by international organisations, including UNDP, UNICEF, the African Union and the United Nations Environment Programme.

Marking International Women’s Day 2026
On the occasion of International Women’s Day, on 11 March 2026, the SOCIOS Sociology Students’ Association organised a programme dedicated to gender equality and social inequalities.
Three lectures were held:
- Associate Professor Anita Dremel – “Mental Labour in the Household”
- Associate Professor Barbara Herceg-Pakšić – “Femicide”
- Narcisa Vrbešić-Ravlić, LLM, univ. spec. iur. – “Women’s Voices in Focus: Initiatives and Change”
Presentation of Judith Butler’s Book “Who’s Afraid of Gender?”
The presentation of the translation of Judith Butler’s book Who’s Afraid of Gender? (Ko se boji roda?) was held on 16 December 2025 at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek, organised by the Osijek branch of the Croatian Sociological Association and the UNIOS Gender Equality Committee. The event attracted considerable interest from students and the wider public and opened space for discussion on contemporary theoretical approaches to gender and gender policies.
The book was presented by Associate Professor Anita Dremel, Ljiljana Bujas, PhD, and Assistant Professor Dragana Božić Lenard.
Guest Lecture by Professor Daniela Kempf
A guest lecture by Daniela Kempf, Professor at Barnard College, Columbia University in New York, and Director of the Speaking Programme at the same university, was held on 11 December 2025, co-organised by the Department of Sociology at FFOS and the Osijek branch of the Croatian Sociological Association.
The lecture was organised in cooperation with Narcisa Vrbešić Ravlić, LLM, spec. iur., and Assistant Professor Ivana Perkušić.
“16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence” Campaign
The Department of Sociology and the Osijek branch of the Croatian Sociological Association traditionally mark the international campaign “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence”. Alongside an introductory lecture by Associate Professor Anita Dremel and activities supporting victims and survivors of violence, a promotional video was recorded with associates from the UNIGEM project network to raise awareness of gender-based violence. The activities were also covered by the media, further expanding their social reach.

Round Table “The Invisible Burden: Gender Dimensions of Cognitive-Emotional Labour”
On 20 November 2025, a round table entitled “The Invisible Burden: Gender Dimensions of Cognitive-Emotional Labour” was held at Hotel Dubrovnik in Zagreb, organised by the association B.a.B.e. as part of the Thematic Systemic Support of the National Foundation for Civil Society Development in the area of “Work-Life Balance”.
Associate Professor Anita Dremel from the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek gave a presentation entitled “Who Thinks for/about Everyone? Mental Labour and the Invisible Dimensions of Gender Inequality in the Family”.
Guest Lectures by Valerija Barada and Željka Zdravković
As part of the activities of the Osijek branch of the Croatian Sociological Association, presentations on balancing family and work responsibilities among parents of underage children in Croatia were held on 28 October 2025 at the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek.
The presentations entitled “Family and Work Responsibilities of Parents: Research Design” and “Life Opportunities of Young People and Gender Inequalities in the Transition to Adulthood” were delivered by Associate Professor Valerija Barada and Assistant Professor Željka Zdravković from the Department of Sociology at the University of Zadar.
Political Elections and the Structural Polarisation of Croatian Society
Full Professor Željko Pavić from the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek gave the popular science lecture “Political Elections and the Structural Polarisation of Croatian Society” as part of the 12th cycle of Open Thursday, within the FUZ&JA science popularisation project. The lecture was held on 28 March 2024 in classroom 54 at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek, Lorenza Jägera 9, beginning at 6 p.m. The lecture focused on the increase in political polarisation in Croatia, its possible causes and consequences, and the relationship between political attitudes and social characteristics such as education, age, gender, financial status and religiosity.
Generational Differences in the Use of Online Social Networks
Snježana Barić-Šelmić, PhD, gave a guest lecture entitled “Generational Differences in the Use of Online Social Networks”. The lecture was held on 16 May 2023 at 4 p.m. at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek, in lecture room 64.
Mandatory Vaccination and Distrust in Science
Associate Professor Željko Pavić from the Chair of Sociology at FFOS gave the lecture “Mandatory Vaccination and Its Opponents” as part of the 7th cycle of the “Open Thursday” science popularisation project. The lecture was held on 31 January 2019 at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek and focused on a sociological interpretation of resistance to vaccination as a symptom of broader distrust in science.
