Mission

The mission of the Department of Croatian Language and Literature – in accordance with the mission of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences – is to achieve excellence in education at the level of its home Faculty and University, as well as at the national and international levels. The purpose of the Department is to meet the educational needs of individuals, employers and society for knowledge and skills in the fields of Croatian Studies, linguistics, literary studies, philological and related humanities and social science disciplines through high-quality study programmes and a high standard of higher education teaching, to bring together outstanding scholars trained in contemporary methods of transferring knowledge and skills and in interactive work with students, to attract the best students from Croatia and abroad, and, through the high-quality academic, professional and cultural work of its teachers and students, to promote Croatian language and literary culture and enhance the reputation of the Faculty and the overall standard of education.

The Department of Croatian Language and Literature offers university study programmes at the single-major undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as double-major undergraduate and graduate study programmes, with the graduate programme branching into teaching, literary research and linguistic research tracks. Upon completion of the graduate programme, students may continue their education at the postgraduate level, with two postgraduate programmes offered at the home Faculty: Linguistics, and Literature and Cultural Identity. This enables continuous education along the academic pathway from undergraduate to postgraduate study, as well as the opportunity to acquire academic titles ranging from Bachelor of Croatian Language and Literature to Master of Croatian Language and Literature in a teaching or non-teaching track, and ultimately Doctor of Science.
