Mission

A permanent challenge for the Department of Information Sciences is the continuous improvement of study programmes that, through a focus on new technologies, interdisciplinary research, and emerging academic disciplines, will respond to the demands of the times in which we live. Our contemporary environment is increasingly referred to as the information society. Research and teaching at the Department are primarily focused on encouraging interdisciplinary research related to the phenomenon of this society. Perhaps even more importantly, one of our fundamental tasks is to examine and improve the quality of human life, with particular attention given to the role of information professionals in promoting all forms of literacy, fostering habits of critical reading, ensuring access to relevant information, and, more generally, building a society in which the possibilities offered by information technology will enrich both the professional and leisure activities of citizens. Our goal is to ensure a high level of information literacy among citizens. The Department of Information Sciences is not merely in the service of the information society. It examines and critically evaluates that society and seeks and offers guidelines that will contribute to its development and improvement. The Department insists on high ethical standards concerning the transfer of knowledge and information.
