Mission

The mission of the Sub-department of Common Courses is to provide high-quality supporting courses in foreign languages, information technology, and physical and health education at the undergraduate and graduate study programmes of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek. Through the implementation of our programmes, we aim to enable students to acquire relevant language and IT competencies, as well as all the values and attitudes that will contribute to their competitiveness in the domestic and international labour market and encourage them to pursue lifelong development of their professional and personal potential.

Goals of the Sub-department

  • to develop language competencies at different proficiency levels through the offered programmes in English and German for the humanities and social sciences, as well as general German and Polish
  • to introduce students to elements of the culture and civilisation of the countries in which the target languages are spoken
  • to improve students’ knowledge and skills required for using professional literature in a foreign language, keeping up with the latest scientific developments and actively participating in international scientific activities
  • to develop digital literacy
  • to provide access to relevant information and teach students to critically evaluate information
  • to acquire knowledge about the highest level of responsibility for one’s own health and the health of others
  • to purposefully develop motor and functional abilities required for performing everyday professional activities
  • to encourage international cooperation with related higher education institutions in order to facilitate student and teaching staff mobility

 

Strategies

  • to provide high-quality and contemporary courses aimed at developing general language competencies at the higher education level
  • to design courses whose content is aligned with the specific characteristics of the curricula of individual departments and sub-departments of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek, with the aim of developing students’ profession-specific competencies
  • to acquire knowledge about healthy lifestyles
  • to encourage the integration of formal teacher education with all other forms of lifelong learning and professional development (seminars, workshops, summer schools, etc.)
  • to establish cooperation with higher education institutions in Croatia and abroad with the aim of facilitating teaching staff and student mobility
