Brief project description:
The main objective of the project is to investigate the semantic and syntactic characteristics of prepositions using a uniform methodology. This will be achieved by processing corpus examples in a database developed for the purposes of the project and by conducting research based on the data obtained. A relational database will be created with predefined fields for entering both open-ended data and data with predefined values. Complex prepositional constructions in which prepositions form part of an inseparable multi-word unit whose meaning is determined as a whole will be identified and investigated, and a repository of such constructions will be created. Particular attention will be paid to the study of literal and figurative meanings in prepositional usage. The analysis of concrete, abstract and figurative meanings of the components of prepositional phrases will enable research into metaphorization and the transfer of concrete and dimensional meanings into the sphere of the abstract and non-dimensional, since metaphorization is commonly used to explain the mapping of a relevant part of the configuration of a spatial domain onto a more abstract domain. The project will also connect contemporary theoretical research on prepositions with applied linguistic research: prepositional phrases in foreign language learning sometimes appear to result from arbitrary choices and can present difficulties for learners. Examples suitable for teaching Croatian as a foreign language at the B level will therefore be extracted from the database and used to prepare a handbook with exercises for teaching prepositions in Croatian as a foreign language.
Early Disciplinary Literacy in Croatian: Characteristics of Textbook Discourse (RAPID)

Brief project description:
The aim of the project is to determine the characteristics of Croatian textbook discourse intended to support the development of early disciplinary literacy (grades 1–6 of primary school). General and disciplinary literacy form the foundations of key competences for lifelong learning, yet the results of PISA studies show that 20%–30% of Croatian pupils have not achieved even the basic level of disciplinary literacy. The project is based on the assumption that mastering the language of a particular discipline is necessary for the development of disciplinary literacy, since knowledge is inseparable from the language through which it is shaped and communicated. In this respect, textbooks play a crucial dual role: they are both a source of knowledge and a source of the linguistic input necessary for developing disciplinary literacy. Despite its importance, the language of Croatian disciplinary textbooks remains an unexplored area. To achieve the project objective, a corpus of textbook discourse will be compiled, comprising 60 textbooks for grades 1 to 6 in three subjects (Science and Social Studies/Science, Mathematics and History), which provide the foundation for the development of other disciplinary literacies. Textbook discourse is viewed as a multilayered and dynamic entity comprising linguistic and non-linguistic (visual) components. A mixed research method will therefore be applied, combining discourse analysis with corpus linguistic methods.

Brief project description:
The main objective of the project is to define clear and precise criteria for distinguishing complements from adjuncts in Croatian and to apply them in the development of a syntactic repository of the Croatian language that would serve as a valuable resource for improving natural language processing tools and for the study and teaching of Croatian. The theoretical component of the project will include a comprehensive analysis of approaches to complements and adjuncts within the Croatian grammatical tradition and within three contemporary linguistic approaches (valency theory and dependency grammar, cognitive grammar and generative grammar). Research into complements and adjuncts is based on three different theories, which is methodologically justified by the theoretical questions that the project seeks to address: (1) which criteria and tests can be used to define and distinguish complements and adjuncts in Croatian, (2) to what extent is the established distinction between complements and adjuncts grammatically sustainable, and (3) can this distinction be defined independently of a particular theoretical framework? Furthermore, as a result of the theoretical component of the project, many previously insufficiently explained phenomena of Croatian grammar will be examined in detail, while data on the structure of the Croatian language will become more accessible to the international linguistic community. The applied component of the project includes the creation of an online repository of Croatian sentences containing verbs accompanied by sentence constituents of ambiguous syntactic function. This includes identifying and listing verbs with such complements or adjuncts, conducting corpus research and analysing them. Sentences containing syntactically ambiguous constituents will be assigned one analysis to make them accessible to a wider range of users, while the existence of an alternative analysis will be recorded in a note. The publicly available repository will be highly useful to several segments of society. Teachers and professors of Croatian will be able to use sentence analyses as an aid in teaching, preparing tests, assessing results for Croatian language competitions and preparing textbook materials. Sentence analyses, including notes on other possible analyses where applicable, will also be useful to students of linguistics, Croatian studies and other language-related study programmes at various stages of their studies. Once the distinction between complements and adjuncts in Croatian has been theoretically and precisely described and illustrated through syntactic examples in the repository, this level of description could be implemented in syntactic annotations of existing Croatian language corpora, with far-reaching implications for all future syntactic research.
VirtuOS – Establishment of a Regional Centre of Competence in the Tourism and Hospitality Sector

Under the Decision on the Establishment of the Network of Regional Centres of Competence in Vocational Education and Training, 25 vocational schools were designated as Regional Centres of Competence in VET, including the VirtuOS Regional Centre of Competence of the Catering and Tourism School Osijek. The project will establish the VirtuOS Regional Centre of Competence, which will provide opportunities to acquire new knowledge and skills required by the tourism and hospitality sector through the implementation of new curricula and educational programmes, innovative learning and teaching methods and practical training, as well as through networking with relevant stakeholders in Croatia and abroad. This will address existing challenges: the mismatch between vocational education programmes and labour market needs, insufficient practical knowledge and skills among teaching staff, and the low level of participation of tourism and hospitality employees in lifelong learning programmes. Within the VirtuOS Regional Centre of Competence, new curricula and programmes tailored to the labour market will be developed; teachers, teaching associates and workplace mentors will receive professional training in methodological and psychological competences; the practical skills of teachers and participants will be improved; lifelong learning, vocational training and professional development programmes will be implemented; a programme for persons with disabilities will be developed; and innovative learning models will be applied. The project will also encourage and develop intensive cooperation with higher education institutions, associations and relevant business entities.

Ivo Andrić in the European Context is a long-term international project of the University of Graz. The main objective of the project is to study the work and life of Nobel Prize winner Ivo Andrić. An academic conference is organized once a year, and papers presented at the conference are regularly published in conference proceedings. To date, 12 conference proceedings volumes and ten books by project participants have been published.

Brief project description:
The purpose of the project is to align educational provision with the principles of the Croatian Qualifications Framework, social needs and labour market needs in the fields of Croatian studies, andragogy, philosophy and cultural studies. The project objectives are as follows: to design and develop a new study programme in andragogy; to design and develop occupational standards and qualification standards for professionals in Croatian studies, philosophy and cultural studies; to improve existing study programmes in Croatian studies, philosophy and cultural studies in accordance with the developed occupational and qualification standards; to improve the higher education quality assurance system at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka and partner institutions; and to improve teaching activities at the Faculty through a range of activities and the establishment and equipping of four new laboratories. The expected results are as follows: development of four occupational standards, development of four qualification standards, development of 11 study programmes, improvement of the quality assurance system at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka and partner institutions (workshops, surveys and reviews), establishment and equipping of three new laboratories/practical training facilities at the Faculty and a practical training facility at a partner adult education institution, implementation of joint research projects involving students and teachers of Croatian studies and cultural studies, participation of teachers and students in professional and academic conferences, involvement of employers in the preparation of documents and student mentoring, and provision of professional and academic literature to two employer organizations/project partners.
PunKt Intermedial Literature Festival

Brief project description:
This is an entirely new phenomenon on the cultural map of Croatia and beyond. The programme is conceptually divided into four sections: Theoretical Point (panel discussions and round tables), Interpretations (artistic adaptations of literary works), Artesting (conversations with artists about art), and Receptions (conversations with the writers whose works are being interpreted). The main idea of the Festival is to interpret literary works from the perspectives of students and mentors and to provide authors from Croatia and four other countries with an opportunity to present and interpret their texts. The aim is to synthesize different forms of art and foster openness towards new forms of artistic expression. Prof. Goran Rem, PhD, and Assoc. Prof. Sanja Jukić, PhD, organized the exhibition The Essence of Intermediality – Hikos Mash-up, Convergence, Polylogue and Theoretical Thought (an exhibition of intermedial student works in the fields of poetry, literary criticism and literary studies created as part of the university project The Media Subject of Poetry, Literary Criticism and Literary Studies (2013/2014), as well as the presentation of the book Osijek Mediostylistics by the Hikos Mash-up student group, Sanja Jukić and Goran Rem). The exhibition was displayed from 7 to 11 October at the Museum of Fine Arts, after which it moved to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek, where it remained throughout the academic year.
Croatian Literature and Culture in the Preparatory Period of the Croatian National Revival (1790–1835)

Brief project description:
The main objective of the project is to prepare for publication a representative selection of texts from the preparatory period of the Croatian National Revival, i.e. the period between 1790 and 1835, which have not previously been published as a collection. Specifically, these are texts by approximately 50 Croatian authors, writers, philologists and publicists in which poetic (pre-Romantic) and social (social and proto/national) indications of literary manifestations, as well as political and cultural trends that would culminate in the period between 1835 and 1848 and predominantly define a fundamental period of Croatian history, the Croatian National Revival, can be identified. In addition to selecting and preparing the texts for publication (transcription and translations from Latin, German, Italian and Hungarian), concise biographies of each individual author and overviews of their work would be researched and prepared, together with an analytical and interpretative study presenting the prepared corpus as an interconnected whole, with particular emphasis on its role in the proto/national emancipation processes of the culture immediately preceding the National Revival and in the formation of pre-Romantic tendencies in Croatian literature.
