The Centre for Interdisciplinary Research of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek invites you to the International Interdisciplinary 4th Congress of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek: “Perspectives of Society, Science and Art in the Age of Artificial Intelligence”. The Congress will be held on 5 and 6 December 2024 at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek. This year’s Congress is also co-organised by the Centre for Scientific Work in Vinkovci of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

INTER_CON 2024 brings together 59 participants, and this year’s programme also includes three plenary lectures to be delivered by: Steve Watson from the University of Cambridge (5 December at 10:00 a.m.), Časlav Livada from Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek (6 December at 10:00 a.m.) and Gordana Tkalec from the University North (6 December at 2:00 p.m.).

In addition to the regular presentations by participants, the Congress programme also includes the following activities: an exhibition of poster presentations (room 39), a workshop for students AI in the Classroom: The Future of Learning Today (5 December at 3:15 p.m.) and a panel discussion on the challenges and perspectives of artificial intelligence (5 December at 3:15 p.m.).

The entire Congress is open to the interested public.

The CEEPUS network “Philosophy and Interdisciplinarity”, which encompasses 27 institutions in 14 European countries, organises summer schools biennially. Since the network is devoted to fostering interdisciplinary research on a broad philosophical basis, its summer schools aim to address a wide range of topics in an interdisciplinary manner through interactive forms of education: papers (lectures) with discussions, seminars, workshops and round tables. In addition to strengthening connections between philosophical inquiry and other disciplines and raising awareness of the interdisciplinary nature of many scientific and social problems, the summer school also promotes stronger cooperation between higher education institutions in Central and South-Eastern Europe.

Following its first highly successful summer school, “The Role of Philosophy in Interdisciplinary Research and the Encounter of European Societies”, held at the Institute of Philosophy in Graz from 12 to 18 July 2021, the network is now organising its second summer school at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek from 10 to 16 July 2023. The rich programme of the second summer school consists of ten papers and discussions, four seminars, one workshop, two round tables and one invited lecture, delivered by 15 university teachers from 8 European countries (Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia). The general aim of this summer school is to further investigate the multifaceted relationship between philosophy and interdisciplinarity by discussing the complex challenges of the Anthropocene from various perspectives, such as the history of philosophy, epistemology, philosophy of science, philosophy of technology and artificial intelligence, philosophy of language and cognitive linguistics, political philosophy, ethics and bioethics, philosophy of education and philosophical counselling.

This year’s summer school aims to deepen the existing collaboration among the 12 participating universities of the CEEPUS network “Philosophy and Interdisciplinarity”, whose representatives (students and teachers) are taking part, as well as to establish new connections and foster the development of future joint projects.

Workshop on the Perspectives of Humanities Education for Community Work

The Centre for Interdisciplinary Research of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek invites all students of the Faculty to a workshop on the perspectives of humanities education for community work, which will be held on 11 January 2023 (Wednesday), from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in room 32 of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The workshop will be led by Nikica Torbica, a former FFOS student who now heads “Društveni atelje”, the community centre of DKolektiv, and is involved in numerous other socially engaged roles.

One of the aims of the workshop is to explore what community work actually entails and the ways in which the knowledge and skills acquired during studies at FFOS can be used in community work, whether through civil society organisations or volunteering. The workshop will also highlight opportunities for improving humanities study programmes from the perspective of strengthening competencies for community work. In addition to the theoretical component, the workshop will therefore include a practical component in which participants will have an opportunity to apply the acquired knowledge creatively.

Community work is based on analysing needs and identifying challenges, taking responsibility, and offering programmes and activities that respond to those needs and challenges. Although it is an interdisciplinary field in which professionals from various disciplines can be successful, experience has shown that experts in the humanities play a particularly important role in appropriate and timely action.

After completing the workshop, students will understand what community work is, be able to identify the knowledge and skills that social sciences and humanities study programmes provide for community work, analyse the responsibility of the humanities intellectual in responding to social challenges, and design activities in response to identified problems in the community.

Participants will also receive a certificate of attendance for the extracurricular activity.

Guest Lectures by Scholars from the People’s Republic of China

We invite you to another event organised by the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research. On 13 December 2022 (Tuesday), starting at 4:15 p.m., guest lectures via Zoom will be delivered by fellow researchers from the People’s Republic of China.

The first lecture, entitled “Ecohumanities”, will be delivered by Goran Đurđević, PhD, from Beiwai College at Beijing Foreign Studies University. The lecturer will discuss fundamental concepts and research methods in the fields of ecocriticism, ecofeminism, environmental history and landscape archaeology.

The second lecture, entitled “Medical Visuality”, will be delivered by Yarong Chen, PhD, from the School of International Organizations at Beijing Foreign Studies University. The lecturer will discuss how diseases, physicians, therapies and medicines are represented in culture, anthropology and history, with particular reference to traditional Chinese medicine and its intersections, similarities and differences with Western and other medical traditions.

Attendance is free, and all Faculty employees, students and individuals interested in these contemporary topics are invited.

Interactive Lectures (Klikeraj Association and CII FFOS)

The project “School for the 21st Century, School for Creativity” is an extracurricular education project for gifted pupils that has been implemented since 2016. The project is led by the Klikeraj Association from Osijek with financial support from the Ministry of Science and Education. This school year, the project is being implemented in cooperation with the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek.

The project includes interactive lectures to be delivered by experts from the Klikeraj Association. The lectures cover various topics in the fields of creativity and giftedness and are intended for professionals in the social sciences and humanities, particularly in education.

The lectures will be held at FFOS and will last six hours, on the following dates:

We invite you to a lecture and panel discussion entitled Role of intellectuals at the time of international conflicts – marking the 100th anniversary of the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Fridtjof Nansen, which will be held on Thursday, 6 October at 6:00 p.m. in the Small Conference Hall of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek, room 39 (Lorenza Jägera 9, Osijek). The lecture is organised by the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek and the Nansen Dialogue Centre Osijek.

The event will consist of two parts. The first part will feature two lectures: a biographical lecture on Fridtjof Nansen, with particular emphasis on his peace and humanitarian work, delivered by Unn Irene Aasdalen, Professor of International Politics and Art History at the Nansen Academy; and a lecture entitled Fridtjof Nansen’s Legacy through the Work of the Nansen Academy Today and Its Contribution to Peacebuilding in the Western Balkans and in Ukraine, delivered by Professor Steinar Bryn, former Dean of the Nansen Academy and a peace worker who has been actively involved in advocating dialogue and working on peace processes and peace education in both the Balkans and Ukraine for the past 20 years. The second part of the event will feature a panel discussion moderated by Nikica Torbica, Master of Education in History.

The lectures are being held to mark the 100th anniversary of the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Fridtjof Nansen, which he earned for creating the first passport for refugees.

Associate Professor Davor Balić, PhD (Deputy Chair of the Centre Committee), and Demian Papo, PhD (Member of the Centre Committee), published an original research paper on Krleža’s interdisciplinary approach to the life and work of the German philosopher Immanuel Kant in the journal Prilozi za istraživanje hrvatske filozofske baštine 48/1 (2022). Their paper is the result of research conducted as part of the Centre’s one-year research plan: Assessments of Interdisciplinarity by Croatian Researchers in the Social Sciences and Humanities.

The first issue of the third volume of the journal Nove teorije has been published, officially marking the beginning of cooperation between the Academy of Arts and Culture and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek on this interdisciplinary project.

We invite you to participate in the fourth and final event of the third popular science cycle scientific inter_view organised by the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek as part of the Faculty’s science popularisation project FUZ&JA. The event is organised in cooperation with the Croatian Sociological Association.

The guest of the event will be Professor Aleksandar Štulhofer, PhD (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb), who will speak on the topic “Interdisciplinarity in Sociology through the Example of Sexuality Research”.

The event will be held on 2 June 2022 (Thursday), starting at 2:00 p.m. in room 39 at FFOS.
The event can be attended in person, in accordance with the epidemiological measures in force, as well as via the YouTube channel of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek.

On Friday, 27 May 2022, fieldwork was held as part of the course Media Pedagogy. During a full-day visit to Belgrade, first-year graduate students of Pedagogy, led by Professor Zlatko Miliša, PhD and course assistant Nemanja Spasenovski, visited the distinguished retired sociologist and philosopher Professor Đuro Šušnjić, PhD.

Professor Đuro Šušnjić was born on 2 May 1934 in Rudopolje. He completed secondary school in Vinkovci and graduated from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb in 1959. He received his PhD from the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Belgrade in 1965. Among his many works, the following titles stand out: Ribari ljudskih duša (6 editions), Otpori kritičkom mišljenju (3 editions), Metodologija-kritika nauke (3 editions), Religija 1, 2, Drama razumevanja, Žetva značenja and Sokrat-život za istinu. In addition to these books, he has published more than 100 research and professional articles, essays, reviews, chronicles, polemics and interviews in domestic and international journals. His works have been translated into several foreign languages. Professor Šušnjić worked at the Institute of Social Sciences and as a professor at the universities of Belgrade, Niš, Novi Sad, Zadar and Zagreb, and spent the 1965/66 academic year in the United States as a Ford Foundation fellow at Columbia University in New York.

Professor Šušnjić delivered two lectures to the students on the topics The Dark Side of the Media and Dialogue as an Encounter of Differences. After the lectures, the students had the opportunity to ask questions and talk with the professor. During the discussion, the students also had the opportunity to meet Professor Zorica Kuburić, PhD, a distinguished sociologist of religion and Full Professor at the Department of Sociology of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Novi Sad, and Professor Čedomir Čupić, PhD, a renowned political scientist and retired professor of the Faculty of Political Sciences in Belgrade

The lectures were recorded and uploaded to the YouTube channel of the Centre for Empirical Research of Religion (CEIR) in Novi Sad.

After both lectures, enriched by a wealth of new knowledge, the students set off back to Osijek, and the wonderful experience of their fieldwork in Belgrade will undoubtedly remain with them for a long time.

Thursday, 10 February 2022 at 2:00 p.m.: Presentation of the journal Nove teorije

Members of the Committee of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek will present the journal Nove teorije together with colleagues from the Academy of Arts and Culture. This is the first joint project of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Art and Science at AUKOS and the FFOS Centre for Interdisciplinary Research.

The journal’s Editor-in-Chief is Associate Professor Krešimir Purgar, PhD, and its Deputy Editors are Professor Leo Rafolt, PhD, and Demian Papo, PhD, while Juraj Jurlina and Hrvoje Potlimbrzović, among others, are members of the journal’s Editorial Board.

The journal Nove teorije publishes original research articles in the field of art studies, including theatre and drama studies, visual arts theory, film studies, musicology and ethnomusicology, as well as art studies as a general field of inquiry. Although it primarily follows the nomenclature of art studies, the journal also gives attention to original insights from interdisciplinary fields of art and science, as well as to all other articles, regardless of their narrower discipline or field, that contribute in theoretically relevant ways to understanding issues concerning the visual and performing arts, musicology, theatre, film and communication media in general. In the coming period, Nove teorije aims to establish itself as the most relevant scholarly journal in the field of art studies in Croatia and as a respected journal in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe.

The presentation of the journal aims to promote interdisciplinarity in science and the arts and to intensify cooperation between the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Academy of Arts and Culture.

The journal will be presented by Associate Professor Krešimir Purgar, PhD, Demian Papo, PhD, and Hrvoje Potlimbrzović in Ceremonial Hall 39 (1st floor).
