Croatian as a Foreign Language Programme

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the J. J. Strossmayer University of Osijek offers the Croatian as a Foreign Language programme, intended for adults who wish to learn the Croatian language and the Latin script.

The programme is organised and delivered at six levels:

  1. Level ‒ A1 ‒ intended for participants with no knowledge of the Croatian language or the Latin script and who are unfamiliar with the standard Croatian language and its grammatical structures (140 contact hours)
  2. Level ‒ A2 ‒ intended for participants who can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at satisfying concrete needs; who can introduce themselves and others and ask and answer questions about personal details, such as where they live, people they know and things they own; who can engage in simple conversation provided that the other person speaks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help (140 contact hours)
  3. Level ‒ B1 ‒ intended for participants who can understand isolated sentences and frequently used words related to areas of immediate personal interest; who can communicate in simple and routine situations requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar topics and activities (140 contact hours)
  4. Level ‒ B1+ ‒ intended for participants who can describe in simple terms aspects of their educational background, immediate environment and matters related to meeting their immediate needs (140 contact hours)
  5. Level ‒ B2 ‒ intended for participants who can understand the main points of clear, standard conversation on familiar matters regularly encountered at work, school, during leisure time, etc.; who can deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in areas where Croatian is spoken; who can produce a simple text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest, describe experiences and events, hopes and ambitions, and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans (140 contact hours)
  6. Level ‒ advanced (C1) ‒ intended for participants who can understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their field of specialisation; who can communicate with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers possible without strain for either party; who can produce clear, detailed texts on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a current issue by presenting the advantages and disadvantages of different options (140 contact hours)

Classes are delivered in whole-class, group and individual formats, 2‒3 times a week (subject to agreement and the availability of staff and facilities), with each session consisting of 4 class periods (180 minutes).

Participants complete the programme by successfully passing the examinations prescribed for each level. Upon completion of the programme, the Faculty issues a certificate of completion of the Croatian as a Foreign Language programme, as well as a certificate of proficiency in the Croatian language and the Latin script required when applying for permanent residence in the Republic of Croatia.

The total net price of the programme per participant is EUR 600.00 per level.

Enrolment requirements:

The Croatian as a Foreign Language programme may be enrolled in and attended by all foreign nationals with regulated legal status in the Republic of Croatia, i.e. foreign nationals who have been granted temporary residence in the Republic of Croatia (pursuant to the Foreigners Act, Official Gazette, No. 79/07). Participants’ prior knowledge of Croatian will be assessed by means of an initial placement test and, depending on the results, participants will enrol at the appropriate level.


Croatian as a Foreign Language Programme

Level – A2 – designed for learners who can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type; who can introduce themselves and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know and things they own; who can engage in a simple conversation provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help (140 contact hours)
  3. Level – B2 – designed for learners who can understand the main points of a clear, standard conversation on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.; who can deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in areas where the Croatian language is spoken; who can produce a simple, connected text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest, describe experiences and events, hopes, and ambitions, and briefly provide reasons and explanations for opinions and plans (140 contact hours)
  6. Level – C1 – designed for learners who can understand the main points of a complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their field of specialization; who can communicate with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party; who can produce a clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a current issue, providing the advantages and disadvantages of various options (140 contact hours)

Classes are organised 2–3 times a week (subject to mutual agreement and the availability of staff and facilities).

Participants complete the programme by successfully passing the exams prescribed for each level. Upon completion, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences issues a Certificate of Completion for the Croatian as a Foreign Language Programme, as well as a Certificate of Proficiency in the Croatian Language and Latin Script, which is required for permanent residence applications in the Republic of Croatia.
