About the Sub-department of Croatian Literature

The Sub-department of Croatian Literature was established in 1977 with the introduction of the four-year study programme in Croatian Language and Literature. Its leading figure at the time was Ivo Bogner, a member of the Zagreb stylistic school and professor of literary history, whose dissertation focused on Josip Kozarac and who was the first Osijek-based scholar employed in Osijek to earn a doctorate in the humanities (cf. Katica Čorkalo, Stilistička metoda u Književnim prikazima Ive Bognera).

In its current form, the Sub-department was established on 4 July 2012 as a new constituent unit of the Department following the division of the former Sub-department of Croatian Literature into a new Sub-department of the same name and the Sub-department of Literary Theory and World Literature.

Members of the Sub-department teach in single-major and double-major undergraduate and graduate study programmes, as well as in the postgraduate study programme.

Prof. Ružica Pšihistal, PhD, initiated the launch of the academic journal Anafora and serves as its Editor-in-Chief, while Prof. Goran Rem, PhD, Assoc. Prof. Ivan Trojan, PhD, and Asst. Prof. Sanja Jukić, PhD, are members of the Editorial Board.

Prof. Goran Rem, PhD, initiated and conceived the project Cvelferica and participated in it as an author and co-author. The project is a scholarly study of the literature, culture and scholarship of the Cvelferija region devastated by flooding, conducted in collaboration with Prof. Ružica Pšihistal, PhD, Assoc. Prof. Ivan Trojan, PhD, and Asst. Prof. Sanja Jukić, PhD. The project resulted in six books – five scholarly studies or monographs on the traditional, prose, poetic, dramatic, scholarly and cultural writings of Cvelferija, as well as a textbook whose content was drawn from the scholarly monographs.

It is a methodologically and bibliographically unique innovation in the humanities – the mapping of a Croatian regional area – which provides a strategic guideline for further research into local regions in Croatia and beyond.
