Translation Internship

Translation Internship is an elective course in the second year of the graduate study programme in English Language and Literature – Translation Track. During the internship, students become more familiar with the working conditions, standards and working methods of translators in translation agencies, publishing houses, international cooperation offices, institutions or offices of court interpreters with which the Faculty has signed cooperation agreements, and gain initial professional experience. The internship takes place in the summer semester and lasts 4 working weeks (160 working hours). Completion of the internship is worth 6 ECTS credits. In agreement with the internship coordinator, students are assigned to a selected institution where a mentor is appointed for each student.

- ratio of observed/taught lessons required of students:
- Students are required to attend 70% of the practical classes held at the Faculty. Students are also required to observe the prescribed number of lessons in schools, actively prepare, teach and analyse the prescribed number of lessons in both the supervised and unsupervised parts of the school internship, collect the required documentation in their Portfolio (teaching documents and materials related to observation, preparation, teaching, lesson analysis and self-evaluation), and complete the application (internship report) or keep an internship diary in the agreed manner. In the case of distance teaching (in a virtual classroom, etc.), students are required to participate actively, with microphones and cameras switched on if/when requested.
- Students are entitled to receive the course coordinator’s signature if they meet the following requirements: they have attended at least 70% of the practical classes held at the Faculty (in a virtual or physical classroom), observed, taught and analysed at least 70% of the prescribed number of lessons in both the supervised and unsupervised parts of the school internship with their mentor, and entered the basic information in the application/internship diary (date, school, class, type of teaching).
- Students are entitled to take the examination if they meet the following requirements: they have attended at least 70% of the practical classes held at the Faculty (in a virtual or physical classroom); observed, taught and analysed the prescribed number of lessons in both the supervised and unsupervised parts of the school internship with their mentor; submitted their Portfolio for assessment; and completed the application/internship diary.

DETAILED INFORMATION ON STUDENT OBLIGATIONS FOR THE SUMMER SEMESTER OF THE 2025/2026 ACADEMIC YEAR
- Practical classes at the Faculty according to the timetable (once a week, 3 hours of practical classes)
Students are required to:
- regularly attend practical classes at the Faculty according to the timetable
- actively participate in class activities
- complete assignments
- collect the required documentation
- compile a student portfolio
- Group internship (supervised part) with a mentor appointed by the Faculty (in mid-March, according to the agreement between the coordinator of a particular group and the mentor)
Students are required to:
- select a group representative during practical classes who will arrange the internship schedule with the designated mentor
- observe, comment on, take notes on and analyse 2 lessons taught by the mentor (as a group)
- individually teach 2 lessons: 1 trial lesson and 1 assessed lesson, as agreed with the mentor and according to the school’s timetable
- observe, comment on and analyse 5 lessons taught by fellow students => spend a total of 9 teaching hours at the school
- Individual internship (unsupervised part) with a mentor proposed by the students themselves, subject to the approval of the internship coordinator
Students are required to:
- Propose a school and mentor themselves – if their group internship is carried out at a secondary school, they should propose a primary school for their individual internship, and vice versa.
- Observe and analyse 6 lessons taught by the mentor in person/in the event of a lockdown: 6 lesson plans and materials for synchronous/asynchronous distance teaching prepared by the mentor.
- Independently prepare, teach and analyse with the mentor 12 lessons/in the event of a lockdown: 12 lesson plans and materials for synchronous/asynchronous distance teaching.
- Spend a total of 18 teaching hours at the school/in distance teaching
- Regularly write notes and lesson plans, as well as comments in the application under “Independently Taught Lesson”
- Plan the individual internship with the mentor so that it does not overlap with practical classes, classes and internships in another subject (sociology, pedagogy, etc.), or teaching within the group internship.
All students are required to enter the agreed dates in the application in a timely manner for health insurance purposes. Uninsured students are not permitted to be present at school. If requested by the school, certain documentation relating to COVID-19 must be provided.
Note:
- If unforeseen circumstances arise due to the pandemic in all or individual schools (lockdown, transition to distance teaching in which students may or may not teach directly in accordance with decisions made by school principals or the Ministry of Science and Education), students must make arrangements directly with their mentors on how to complete the internship and fulfil all planned obligations (6+12 lessons), and must inform the internship coordinator in a timely manner.
- If they are unable to fulfil all obligations with one mentor, students should find another mentor at the same school or at another school. Students must inform the internship coordinator of any change of mentor and/or school in a timely manner so that official letters can be sent to school principals.
- The planned assignments, number of observed lessons and number of lessons to be taught will not be changed during the semester
Final obligations before the examination:
The student portfolio must be submitted 5 DAYS BEFORE THE EXAMINATION or left at the reception desk (papers or CD-ROM) and/or all agreed materials must be uploaded to Moodle.
The documentation (student portfolio) should contain:
- Observation of group mentors – 2 forms (to be uploaded to Moodle no later than 1 day after the observation)
- notes on observing fellow students
- notes on observing individual mentors
- lesson plans (individual internship) for 12 lessons
- 1 lesson plan – student with learning difficulties
- 1 lesson plan for KO
- 3 tasks for individualization and differentiation
