The International Students of History Association (ISHA) was founded in 1989 in Budapest as an academic, non-profit and independent network of students of history and related disciplines, operating predominantly in Europe. The aim of this organisation is to exchange views and understandings of history and, in this way, to foster an understanding of one another’s culture and customs. The primary activities of the organisation are international meetings held several times a year. These are seminars and conferences that take place throughout the year and are intended to encourage discussion and debate on pre-selected topics from history. They are always organised by previously agreed ISHA sections, and the selected section acts as the host of the seminar, taking care of the other participants and presenting its university, faculty, city and surrounding area to them. In addition to seminars, ISHA also has its own journal, Carnival, which is published once a year and contains the best papers by students from all ISHA branches in English. Several ISHA branches operate in the Republic of Croatia (Zagreb, Split, Pula, Rijeka, Zadar), and one of them, under the name ISHA Osijek, operates at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek. It was founded in October 2007 and has since made a major contribution to the work of the organisation. Very soon, an initiative was launched to start a journal for history students, and the journal Essehist was established. Members of ISHA Osijek have so far participated in numerous ISHA seminars and have independently organised a successful New Year seminar on the topic “War” (2007/2008), a summer seminar on the topic “History of the Marginalised” (2016), and a regional seminar entitled “Yugoslavia (Re)visited” (spring 2018), with the support of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek and the Student Union of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
