1st International Scientific Conference “From the History of Education: Education and Pedagogy Between the Two World Wars”

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek, in cooperation with the Croatian Institute of History – Department for the History of Slavonia, Srijem and Baranja, is organising the 1st International Scientific Conference “From the History of Education: Education and Pedagogy Between the Two World Wars”. The Conference will be held on 10 and 11 September 2026 at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek.

The Conference is dedicated to the history of educational institutions, education policy, pedagogical ideas, the teaching profession, curricula and the education of various social groups in the period between the two world wars. Its aim is to bring together historians, education scholars and researchers from related disciplines and to provide a platform for comparing national and regional experiences, exchanging new archival findings and developing future scholarly cooperation.

The Conference programme includes 59 presentations by 69 authors and co-authors affiliated with institutions from 11 countries. Plenary lectures will be delivered by Štefka Batinić, PhD, from the Croatian School Museum, and Prof. Snježana Šušnjara, PhD, from the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo. During the Conference, parallel sessions will be held on the development and reform of education, education and ideology, pedagogical thought, women’s education, the teaching profession, educational institutions and other topics related to education and pedagogy between the two world wars. The presentations can be attended in classrooms 32 and 39.

The programme also includes an exhibition on the Czechoslovak Masaryk School in Bjelovar (1925–1941), prepared by the State Archives in Bjelovar and Češka obec Bjelovar to mark the 100th anniversary of the school’s opening. The exhibition will be displayed in the corridor next to classroom 39 (1st floor).
