About the Programme

Computational Thinking and Python Programming Programme

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek offers the lifelong learning programme Python, Computational Thinking and Programming. The programme is primarily intended for primary and secondary school teachers. It is also intended for participants who are not yet employed in the education system but wish to develop the competencies required to teach computer science in primary and secondary schools.

Since Python was created in 1990 and was not taught at universities until relatively recently, computer science teachers, despite the knowledge acquired through their education and teaching experience, are faced with a new programming language and new implementation methods that they must first master independently in order to provide their students with higher-quality instruction at a more advanced level. Teaching computational thinking and programming has traditionally been associated with the field of technical sciences. However, as technology permeates every aspect of human life and society in general, it has become clear that this field is no longer exclusively linked to technical sciences, but that instruction is also needed in other areas, including the social sciences. A clear example of this is the requirement for all pupils to study computer science, including computational thinking and programming, rather than only those who choose it as an elective subject. The approach to computational thinking and programming is not based exclusively on mathematics and logic (although they form the foundations of the field); instead, problem-solving is approached through concepts that are clear and understandable to participants. Participants in this programme who will teach computer science as a compulsory subject in primary and secondary schools are likewise expected to apply the same principles when working with pupils, as not every pupil is destined to become a programmer.

The aim of the programme is to provide participants with professional development in the field of computational thinking and programming, with implementation in the Python programming language.

Programme learning outcomes:

  • Break down complex problems into several smaller, independent logical units
  • Use programming techniques to solve problems
  • Implement problem solutions in the Python programming language

Upon completion of the programme, participants are issued a certificate of successful completion of the lifelong learning programme.

 

Admission requirements:

The programme is open to persons who have completed at least an undergraduate degree, regardless of the field of study.
