Applicants who have completed secondary school may enrol in the undergraduate study programme in accordance with the current admission requirements published on the website of the National Information System for Applications to Higher Education Institutions. The undergraduate German Studies programme provides students with fundamental professional education and enables them to acquire a solid level of German language proficiency. Particular attention is also paid to developing the ability to apply the knowledge acquired in practice. The programme also includes content related to scientific methodology and theoretical knowledge in the field. Furthermore, the programme provides students with an understanding of linguistic phenomena in all their complexity: within the context of the language system, its function as a medium, and its historical development. Logical and analytical thinking is encouraged so that students are prepared to analyse more complex issues in the fields of language and literature. Finally, the undergraduate German Studies programme seeks to foster cultural and linguistic links with the Croatian language through contrastive and comparative seminar papers in language and literature.
Students who successfully fulfil all requirements of the undergraduate German Studies programme will possess solid knowledge and skills and will be able to work in various areas of the labour market and the liberal professions. Particular emphasis should be placed on jobs in publishing and bookselling, the media, public administration, public and private institutions involved in cultural policy and cultural mediation, advertising, marketing, public relations, as well as various liberal professions (e.g. publicists, writers).
Academic title awarded upon completion of the study programme:
Upon completion of the three-year undergraduate study programme in German Language and Literature, students acquire the academic title “Bachelor of German Studies”.

Admission requirements:
The programme may be enrolled in by students who have completed an undergraduate study programme in German Language and Literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek or at another related faculty in Croatia or abroad. Completion of an undergraduate study programme in German Language and Literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek or at another related faculty in Croatia or abroad is sufficient for following the graduate study programme in German Language and Literature, Teacher Education Track.
In this study programme, students further develop the competences acquired during the undergraduate study programme in German Language and Literature and, upon completion of the graduate programme, acquire the following professional and specialist competences:
- German language proficiency at the C1-C2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages,
- fundamental knowledge of contemporary linguistic disciplines,
- knowledge of the culture of German-speaking countries (geographical, cultural-historical, socio-political, economic and other aspects),
- knowledge of literary studies terminology and methodology,
- knowledge of the theoretical foundations of foreign and second language learning and teaching, as well as the linguistic and cognitive theories on which they are based;
- knowledge of fundamental principles of foreign language teaching methodology, as well as methods and procedures for teaching German from diachronic and synchronic perspectives;
- knowledge of research techniques related to the process of learning and teaching German as a foreign language.
Students acquire the following skills:
- the ability to conduct linguistic analysis of language structure and use,
- the ability to independently interpret literary works,
- the ability to apply an intercultural approach in comparative analyses of cultural, economic, historical and political relations between Croatia and German-speaking countries,
- the ability to plan, conduct and critically reflect on the process of learning and teaching German as a foreign language,
- the ability to use strategies for learning and teaching language knowledge and skills,
- the ability to use information and communication technologies,
- the ability to find information,
- the ability to apply scientific and research methods.
Students who complete the graduate study programme in German Language and Literature, Teacher Education Track, are qualified to teach German to learners of all age groups and at all levels of language learning in public and private educational institutions of various types.
Professional or academic title or degree awarded upon completion of the study programme:
Upon completion of the study programme, students acquire the academic degree of Master of German Studies and the professional qualification of German Language and Literature Teacher.

During the graduate study programme, students acquire theoretical and practical knowledge required for professional written translation, primarily in the professional fields they selected during their studies, as well as for literary translation. Students also acquire knowledge of contemporary translation studies, enabling them to reflect on a broad range of theoretical issues related to translation. They also acquire knowledge of scientific and research methods in the field of translation studies. Furthermore, students gain insight into the significance of German translations for the cultural history of Slavonia and, upon completion of the programme, will also be qualified to research translation materials from German into Croatian and vice versa preserved in museums, archives and libraries. During the graduate German Studies programme, Translation Track, students also acquire the ability to use information and communication technologies.

Applicants who have completed an undergraduate study programme in German Language and Literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek or elsewhere in the Republic of Croatia or abroad may enrol. Applicants who obtained their bachelor’s degree abroad must be native speakers of either Croatian or German. If German is their native language, they must hold a bachelor’s degree in Croatian Studies. If Croatian is their native language, they must hold a bachelor’s degree in German Studies. This is a double-major study programme. It may be combined with any double-major graduate programme in either a non-teacher education or teacher education track offered at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek (except the double-major graduate programme in German Studies, Teacher Education Track). Both study subjects have equal status.
