The primary purpose of the Research Colloquia of the Department of Information Sciences is to present the research work of Department members to other members, as well as to all interested students.
The first Research Colloquium of the Department of Information Sciences was held on Thursday, 9 July 2015 at 6:00 p.m., at which the Head of the Research Colloquium, Asst. Prof. Boris Bosančić, PhD, gave a lecture entitled The Role of Information in the Process of Knowledge Acquisition.
The second Research Colloquium of the Department of Information Sciences was held on Wednesday, 3 February 2016 at 12:00 p.m., at which Milijana Mičunović, PhD, Asst. Prof. Boris Badurina, PhD and Asst. Prof. Boris Bosančić, PhD gave a lecture entitled The Technological Triad – Towards a Concept of the Totality of Contemporary Reality.

The fifth Research Colloquium of the Department of Information Sciences was held on Wednesday, 26 May 2021, in virtual classroom 110 at 12:30 p.m. Faculty members of the Department presented their research activities.

Golden Years Project
The aim of the project is to involve older people in community life through activities adapted to their needs and interests. Activities implemented through the project include workshops on healthy nutrition and exercise, film evenings, outdoor board games and similar activities. The project holder is the Croatian Rural Development Network. Active Retirement Project
The aim of the project is related to preparing and implementing activities of the Association of Pensioners of the City of Osijek in order to acquire new knowledge, strengthen capacities in the field of active ageing and improve the quality of life of retired persons. The project also plans the development of two new social innovations – Bringing the City’s History to Life and Music Therapy – intended to improve the quality of life of retired persons. The Department of Information Sciences is represented in the project by Asst. Prof. Josipa Selthofer, PhD, and Asst. Prof. Tomislav Jakopec, PhD. iConference 2021
The 2021 e-conference (iConference 2021) of the iSchools organisation was originally conceived as a four-day “hybrid” conference offering both virtual and in-person participation. As the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic made travel impractical, the conference was held virtually from 17 to 31 March 2021. The conference was organised by the School of Information Resource Management (The School of Information Resource Management – SIRM) at Renmin University of China. The conference theme was Diversity | Divergence | Dialogue (Diversity | Divergence | Dialogue). More than 500 participants had the opportunity to attend approximately one hundred pre-recorded lectures, six workshops, seventeen doctoral student presentations and other activities, as well as to network in a virtual environment.
LIDA 2021
From 19 to 22 April 2021, the international Libraries in the Digital Age (LIDA) conference was held. The conference has been organised since 2000 by Rutgers University in the USA, the Department of Information Sciences at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek and the Department of Information Sciences at the University of Zadar. That year’s conference addressed the challenges and changes in identity brought about by the digital paradigm for libraries, educational institutions and citizens, with particular emphasis on ethical aspects. More than 150 authors from around the world presented on this and related topics (Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Latvia, Lebanon, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, United Kingdom, USA). Twenty-six doctoral and graduate students from several countries also participated in the conference. One of the three invited speakers was Milijana Mičunović from the Department of Information Sciences at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek, who gave a highly engaging lecture on the coexistence of humans and technology in the so-called technosphere. Several faculty members from the Department of Information Sciences at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek participated in the conference and presented the results of their research (Boris Bosančić, G. Gašo, S. Faletar Tanacković, K. Petr Balog, M. Gilman Ranogajec, B. Badurina), while Ines Horvat received the award for best student poster for her work on Croatian written heritage and its role in preserving cultural identity. The award for best student paper was presented to graduates of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek, Ivona Grgić and Cvijetin Vidaković, for their research into the information behaviour of retired persons and the development of an application intended to make it easier for them to find useful information online. The next LIDA conference will be held in Osijek in May 2023.
UNIOS ZUP 2018 – 76 PROJECT “Information Needs of People with Alzheimer’s Disease and Their Family Members”
The aim of the project was to identify the information needs of people with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), their family members (informal caregivers) and/or guardians concerning financial, social, pension, inheritance, healthcare and other rights and issues, as well as patterns of their information behaviour. Particular attention was devoted to identifying the barriers these individuals encounter when searching for necessary information and the difficulties associated with exercising the aforementioned rights. The main conclusion of the research conducted was that existing legal measures and policies are not specifically oriented towards the needs of people with Alzheimer’s disease and, in essence, violate their fundamental human rights. Furthermore, it was established that the city of Osijek does not have an adequate support system (healthcare, social and information support) for people with Alzheimer’s disease and their family members and that most of their needs remain unmet. People with the disease and their family members have numerous questions but do not know whom to ask, are unfamiliar with their rights and do not know how to exercise them. Based on the research findings obtained through the project, a printed Guide containing useful and verified information was prepared to make life easier for people with Alzheimer’s disease, their family members and other persons involved in their care in the city of Osijek. In addition, project funding was used to acquire book and non-book materials that will form the basis of a special library collection at the City and University Library Osijek, intended for people with AD and their family members and to be used for therapeutic and research purposes.
Application for the project Building Dementia-Friendly Public Libraries: Theoretical and Practical Preconditions.
A continuation of the project is planned, with the aim of investigating the theoretical and practical prerequisites for building dementia-friendly public libraries as cultural institutions in which people with Alzheimer’s disease feel welcome and included. Through planned research and professional activities involving researchers, students, the local cultural sector and interested civil society organisations, the project will seek to address one of the significant challenges of contemporary Croatian society: improving the quality of life of people with Alzheimer’s disease. Activities will include educating and raising awareness among librarians and information science students – future librarians – about AD, including people with AD in the social life of the community by adapting library services to their needs and interests, and producing adapted reading materials.
