On Friday, 27 March 2026 at 6:00 p.m. at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek (Small Ceremonial Hall, room 39, 1st floor), the edited volume Societies and Diseases: Responses to Health Crises in Modern and Contemporary History will be presented. The volume will be presented by its editor Luka Pejić and contributing authors Slađana Josipović Batorek and Damir Sekulić. The discussion will be moderated by Franka Maslov.
Through sixteen articles, the volume examines the multiple effects of epidemics and pandemics on social relations and political practices in Croatia and around the world from the 18th century to the present day. The publication is the result of a one-year project of the same name and a scientific conference held at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek in April 2023. The authors of the published papers approach these issues from different perspectives, analysing selected topics primarily as historians, but also as philosophers, linguists and pedagogues. Their articles focus on the complex implications of various health crises caused, for example, by outbreaks of plague, smallpox epidemics, and the spread of Spanish flu, syphilis or coronavirus.
