The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek (hereinafter: the Faculty), announces a call for applications for the enrolment of 15 doctoral students in the Doctoral Study Programme in Linguistics, in the scientific area of the humanities, scientific field of philology.
General enrolment requirements and criteria
I. The Doctoral Study Programme may be enrolled in by:
- applicants who have completed a university graduate study programme in the humanities (field of philology) under the Bologna system
- applicants who have completed a four-year university undergraduate study programme in the humanities (field of philology) under the study system in force before 2005
- applicants who have obtained the academic degree of Master of Science in the humanities under the pre-Bologna system
- applicants who have completed a pre-Bologna master’s study programme and passed all prescribed examinations or have passed them partially.
If applications are submitted by candidates who do not fall within the above categories, their status will be considered individually by the Committee for the Award of Doctoral Degrees.
II. Applicants for enrolment in the study programme must have completed a university graduate study programme with an average grade of at least 4.0.
III. Applicants must have an active command of at least one foreign language, which must be evident from the submitted documentation.
Candidate selection criteria
- academic performance at the previous level of study
- a motivation letter containing an outline of the proposed doctoral research
- an interview with the applicant regarding their research interests (applicants will be informed of the interview dates via the website of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek).
Information about the study programme
The Doctoral Study Programme lasts three years, i.e. six semesters, and upon completion students acquire 180 ECTS credits and the academic degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the scientific area of the humanities, scientific field of philology.
The tuition fee is EUR 1,100.00 per semester.
The tuition fee includes the costs of the evaluation and defence of the doctoral dissertation, diploma printing and graduation ceremony.

The following documents must be enclosed with the application:
- the application form available below the call for applications
- curriculum vitae
- diploma confirming completion of a university graduate study programme (a copy certified by a notary public or by the competent institution that issued the diploma), or a decision on the academic recognition of a foreign diploma (certified copy)
- a motivation letter containing an outline of the applicant’s research interests
- transcript of grades from the university undergraduate and graduate study programmes
- recommendations from two university teachers
- the employer’s decision on the payment of tuition fees (if the student does not pay the tuition fee personally).
The call for applications is open until 15 September 2025. Applicants will be informed of the results no later than 1 October 2025, and the deadline for submitting an objection is 24 hours from the publication of the results.
Enrolment in the Doctoral Study Programme in Linguistics will take place no later than 20 October 2025.
If an insufficient number of candidates apply, the Faculty reserves the right not to enrol a new generation of students in the above-mentioned study programme in the academic year 2025/2026. Applicants who have applied to this call will be informed of such a decision in due time.
