SIXTH CAREER WEEK OF JOSIP JURAJ STROSSMAYER UNIVERSITY OF OSIJEK
As in every academic year, this year’s University of Osijek Career Week was held from 4 to 8 May 2026. The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek also participated in the event by organising workshops and lectures. At the initiative of the Department of German Language and Literature and Professor Vladimir Karabalić, PhD, a joint OeAD and DAAD event was held on 5 May 2026, at which lecturers Ina Gittel and David Spier presented scholarships, study opportunities and other programmes for stays in Germany and Austria. Following the presentations, they were available to answer questions from the participants and provided information materials for further research and scholarship enquiries.
As part of the same event, and at the initiative of the Department of English Language and Literature and Associate Professor Dubravka Vidaković Erdeljić, PhD, the panel discussion How to Become (and Remain) a Translator was held. Three established translators – Ljerka Radoš, Marija Viljušić and Petar Botić – participated in the panel and gave students a range of advice on how to begin and successfully develop a career in translation. The guests also spoke about working in translation agencies, starting their own businesses and career opportunities in European institutions. They also addressed the changes taking place in the translation profession following the emergence of AI and emphasised that artificial intelligence does not eliminate the need for translators, but instead creates new professional opportunities.
Numerous students attended all the events organised as part of the 6th Career Week of Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek, demonstrating great interest in career development following the completion of their studies at the Faculty.

The University of Osijek is organising University of Osijek Career Week from 4 to 8 May 2026, with the aim of supporting the career development of our students and connecting them with the business sector. The week will include a range of activities, lectures, workshops, round tables, panel discussions and speed dating. All activities are jointly organised by the University Centre for Quality Assurance and Enhancement in Higher Education and the constituent units of our University.

Career Day Held at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek in 2025
On 22 October 2025, Career Day, FFOS for Career, was held at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek, in the Small Ceremonial Hall (room 39). The event opened the door to the real labour market for students. Its aim was simple but extremely important: to demonstrate that the humanities, social sciences and IT do not have to be opposing worlds, but can instead complement one another and open the way to new forms of employment and personal development.
The introductory address was delivered by Assistant Professor Tomislav Dagen, PhD, Head of the Career Centre, while Assistant Professor Silvija Ćurak, PhD, the Vice-Dean responsible for this area, officially opened Career Day.
Assistant Professor Tihana Koprivnjak Popović, PhD, from the Faculty of Economics and Business in Osijek, emphasised that entrepreneurship is increasingly in the hands of young people and that success requires recognising opportunities, bringing together the right people and having the courage to launch one’s own projects.
She was followed by Luka Matić, a former student of pedagogy and philosophy who now works in the IT sector. He showed students how interdisciplinarity and the knowledge acquired at FFOS can be successfully transferred to the digital world.
Ina Gittel spoke about DAAD scholarship opportunities, while Alen Mrvac from the MojPosao portal presented current labour-market data and encouraged students to recognise the changes brought about by new employment trends. In addition, Transcom representatives Josip Marić, Lucija Piskač, Melissa Pohlmann and Marijana Orkić explained the advantages of working in a call centre as a flexible student job that can develop into a serious career. At the end of their presentation, the audience also participated in a short knowledge quiz.
Two former students of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences also shared their experiences: Mia Mozer Ćosić, owner of the Helen Doron franchise in Osijek, and Sara Hocenski from Tinker Labs. They highlighted how language and pedagogical knowledge can be used to develop an independent business career in the STEM and education sectors.
Ines Rubil, Professor, then spoke about working as a translator and establishing a business, while Marijana Kopljar from Osijek-Baranja County highlighted the importance of sole proprietorships as a quick and accessible form of self-employment.
The programme concluded with a lecture by Valerija Smolčić from SAVD Group, a company that combines translation, technology and social engagement, offering opportunities for students of languages and communication studies in an international context.
Throughout the day, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek once again demonstrated that it is not merely a place of theoretical learning, but also a space where ideas, people and opportunities meet. The interdisciplinarity, openness and practical orientation of the event confirmed that careers are not built solely in the classroom, but wherever knowledge is connected with experience.

Presentation of the COBE IT Company (organised on behalf of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Department of Information Sciences by Associate Professor Tomislav Jakopec, PhD)
On behalf of COBE, Human Resources Manager Sara Goršek introduced students to the company, the scope of its work, team organisation and available job positions. Goršek explained the desirable characteristics of prospective employees, as well as the most common difficulties young people face in the workplace after graduating from university.
Career Prospects with Hungarian Language Skills (organised on behalf of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Chair of Hungarian Language and Literature by Assistant Professor Timea Anita Bockovac, PhD)
Career Week was held at Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek from 5 to 9 May 2025, with the primary aim of introducing students to the requirements and opportunities of the labour market. The Chair of Hungarian Language and Literature of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences also participated in the programme to raise awareness of the advantages that knowledge of Hungarian offers in the labour market.
On 8 May 2025, interested students participated in a lecture and interactive workshop delivered by the invited distinguished guest Bálint Juhász, a writer, self-awareness and personal-development coach and Secretary of the Association of Hungarian Entrepreneurs in Croatia. Juhász presented the content and experiences of cross-border INTERREG programmes implemented in recent years, including an eco-art festival, children’s camps, publishing activities and exhibitions. He also presented current projects that strengthen economic and cultural cooperation in the Baranja region. The workshop that followed encouraged active student participation and helped students make more informed and well-founded career decisions.
The self-awareness and decision-making exercises significantly contribute to the development of personal competencies and are also essential for successful career choices and strengthening the internal motivation required to succeed in the labour market.
Overall, this Career Week programme provided a practical and interactive learning experience that supports students in consciously planning their careers and helps them better understand and manage the opportunities and challenges of the labour market.

Lecture by Mladen Nenadić, MA, Owner of the Dialog Centre, on Foreign Language Teaching and Translation Services in His Company (organised on behalf of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Department of German Language and Literature by Professor Vladimir Karabalić, PhD)
The lecture by Mr Mladen Nenadić and his colleague from the Dialog Centre in Osijek, held on Friday, 9 May, from 12:30 to 13:15 in Ceremonial Hall 60, was very interesting to the graduate students of German and English studies and the members of teaching staff in attendance: Professor Marija Omazić, language instructor Iris Etter and Professor Vladimir Karabalić, PhD. In the first part, Mr Nenadić spoke about foreign language teaching at his Centre, with particular emphasis on German and English, as well as Croatian for foreigners. In the second part, his colleague discussed translation services at the Dialog Centre, which include all forms of written and oral translation from foreign languages into Croatian and vice versa, including court interpreting. Both speakers offered our students opportunities for cooperation and possible subsequent employment at their Centre after completing their studies. They also highlighted employment opportunities at their parent centre in Austria.
All in all, it was a wonderful event held in a warm and welcoming atmosphere!
Workshop Held: Pedagogue as an Entrepreneur: From an Idea to a Job Tailored to You
Mia Filipov, PhD, Teaching Assistant at the Department of Pedagogy, and graduate pedagogue Katarina Mikulić held the workshop Pedagogue as an Entrepreneur: From an Idea to a Job Tailored to You on Tuesday, 6 May. During the 90-minute workshop, 17 female students and recent graduates in pedagogy designed and developed their own entrepreneurial ideas with a pedagogical focus. The participants received specific guidance on starting their own businesses and using active labour-market policy measures, particularly the Croatian Employment Service’s self-employment grants. During the workshop, they also had an opportunity to evaluate their business plans according to the Croatian Employment Service’s criteria in order to assess their feasibility. We hope that the workshop served as the participants’ first step towards developing a career outside the traditional education system, tailored to their own needs. The workshop was held as part of this year’s Career Week programme at Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek.

From 6 to 10 May 2024, Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek is organising University of Osijek Career Week with the aim of supporting students’ career development and connecting them with the business sector. The week will include a range of activities, workshops, round tables, panel discussions and lectures jointly organised by all the academic and arts-teaching constituent units of our University.
One of the activities taking place during the University Career Week 2024 is the Career Promenade. As part of the Career Promenade, which will be held on 8 May 2024, students will be able to have short interviews with employers (speed dating). You can register for a short interview here. Participants should prepare a CV and arrive at the University Residence Hall, in the common room on the first floor, at their scheduled time. Applications will remain open until all places have been filled, but no later than 2 May 2024 at 6 p.m. Registered participants will be informed of their exact appointment time by email.

Opening of Career Week
From 27 November to 1 December, the Career Centre of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek organised Career Week with the aim of supporting students’ future careers and connecting them with the business sector. Representatives of the University, the City and the County attended the opening ceremony. The Dean of the Faculty, Professor Ivan Trojan, PhD, welcomed the guests and exhibitors, while the Rector of the University, Professor Vlado Guberac, PhD, officially opened the event. Everyone present agreed that Career Week was an excellent opportunity for students of the Faculty and the University to become acquainted with the labour market awaiting them after graduation and to receive guidance for their professional and personal development.
Activities during Career Week
In the Faculty Gallery, students were able to visit the exhibition section of Career Week, where 19 employers and associations presented their work. Career Week activities included employer presentations delivered through 44 different activities: workshops, lectures and exchanges of experience with Faculty alumni. Employers and experts from various sectors spoke about their experiences in the labour market, career paths and employment opportunities, including education, culture, media, translation and IT companies, publishing and librarianship. During Career Week, Mario Burek, adviser to the Ombudsperson for Persons with Disabilities, delivered a lecture on the work and employment of persons with disabilities. Mirna Matković, a Faculty alumna and founder and director of Ženski recenziRAJ, Croatia’s largest digital women’s community and most-read Croatian review portal, also presented her career path to students.
Closing of Career Week
Career Week concluded with the lecture “When FFOS Makes You a Person for a Better Future”, delivered by Lucija Baraban and Ivana Crnoja from the Pobjede Association. Through the lecture, students were introduced to the activities and work of civil society organisations.
Career Week was organised and delivered by a working group led by the Head of the Career Centre, Narcisa Vrbešić-Ravlić, University Master of Laws, Specialist in Law, Lecturer. Several months of meticulous organisation resulted in a strong response from both employers, who expressed an interest in participating in the next Career Week, and students, who were able to choose from a wide range of career paths and identify those most compatible with their interests and/or study programmes. The main objective of the week was therefore achieved: students gained insight into a broad range of career opportunities in the labour market, while the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek presented its study programmes and the resulting qualifications and professions to the wider public.
Future Plans of the Centre
The next step for the Career Centre of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek is to support students’ careers through a system of student career ambassadors. They should serve as the voice of their fellow students and guide the further planning of Career Centre activities in response to the challenges students may encounter along their future career paths.

On Wednesday, 22 May 2019, beginning at 6 p.m. in room 53 at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek, the seminar “How to Find Employment Using EU Funds?” will be held. The seminar is organised by the Edunova adult education institution and the FFOS Alumni Association and will be delivered by Toni Žufić, graduate lawyer and Edunova lecturer with many years of experience in preparing and implementing development strategies and projects financed through EU funds. Participants will learn important information about projects and EU funds, including where to find calls for proposals, what is important when writing a project, which documents are required and where they can be found, what to pay attention to when submitting a project, how a project should be structured and whom project writers can contact for assistance. They will also receive additional information about training in writing projects financed through EU funds, what the training provides and the opportunities available after completing it. Individuals who have completed the EU-funded project-writing training will also address the participants and explain how the training helped them find employment.
