• The Sub-department was established on 1 February 2007 following the division of the Sub-department of Croatian Language, which was established in 1997 (the Department of Croatian Language and Literature currently comprises the following sub-department: Sub-department of Croatian Literature, Sub-department of Croatian Language History and Croatian Dialectology, Sub-department of Contemporary Croatian Language, Sub-department of Croatian Language and Linguistics, Sub-department of Early Croatian Literature, Sub-department of Literary Theory and World Literature).

– cooperation with students and teachers of the Catering and Tourism School, under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Milica Lukić, PhD – they translated the Glagolitic cookbook Gaštronomija grišnoga fra Karla z Dubašnice, after which they prepared and tasted interesting dishes such as Monastery Minestrone and Cod à la Glagolitic, accompanied by lectures (Prof. Milovan Tatarin, PhD)

– as part of the course Slavic Scripts, reviving the memory of the manner/form of teaching at the first Slavic university, founded by Clement of Ohrid, the best-known and most prominent disciple of the Holy Brothers, after the death of St Methodius (after 885) in Ohrid, in the territory of present-day North Macedonia – the first Slavic school was held outdoors and was very modest (classes by Count Pejačević’s Art Nouveau fountain)

– as part of the course Cyrillo-Methodian Heritage in 19th-Century Croatian Culture, a guided walk through Osijek, the city where Josip Juraj Strossmayer was born – visiting places associated with the life and work of the Croatian bishop (birthplace – today Hotel Osijek, Cathedral, County Hall, etc.)

– as part of the course Cyrillo-Methodian Heritage in 19th-Century Croatian Culture, field classes in Đakovo – the programme was led by Luka Marijanović, MSc, retired professor of the Faculty of Theology (lecture on Bishop Strossmayer’s role in the revival of the Cyrillo-Methodian heritage in the 19th century, tour of the Cathedral, crypt, Bishop’s Palace, Diocesan Museum, Faculty of Theology, library and archives, and a welcome address by Assoc. Prof. Vladimir Dugalić, PhD, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Theology)

– at the General Assembly of Matica hrvatska in Sinj on 18 June 2016, President of Matica hrvatska, Academician Stjepan Damjanović, awarded the Golden and Silver Charters of Matica hrvatska to branches for publishing activities. The Matica hrvatska Branch in Osijek received the Golden Charter of Matica hrvatska for the work We Speak, Therefore We Exist – Literary-Language and Language-Historical Studies by Prof. Milica Lukić, PhD (Head of the Department of Croatian Language and Literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek, Head of the Department of Croatian Language of Matica hrvatska – Osijek Branch) and Vera Blažević Krezić. – GLAGOPEDIA – the GLAGOPEDIA mobile application (for Android and Windows, i.e. WindowsPhone operating systems) was developed as part of the project “Glagolitic Monuments through the Centuries of Croatian Literacy” under the supervision of Prof. Milica Lukić, PhD. The project, aimed at popularising and facilitating the acquisition of teaching content related to Croatian language history (script component: Glagolitic, Cyrillic and Latin-script monuments), was approved and funded by the Management of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek, and was conceived and implemented at the Department of Croatian Language and Literature (Programme Agreements, objective “Improvement of Learning Outcomes” in the 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 academic years). – Presentation of Tomo Šalić’s monograph Speech and Customs of Vrbica in the Đakovo Region. On 18 March 2017, the Đakovo Branch of Matica hrvatska organised a presentation of the monograph Speech and Customs of Vrbica in the Đakovo Region by Vinkovci historian, ethnologist, cultural worker and local chronicler Tomo Šalić. In addition to the author, Rev. Stjepan Podboj, Prof. Mirko Ćurić and Prof. Vlado Filić, the monograph was also presented by reviewer Prof. Milica Lukić, PhD, Head of the Sub-department of Croatian Language History and Croatian Dialectology. In her presentation, Prof. Lukić devoted particular attention to the extensive dictionary of the Vrbica – Šokac, Old Štokavian speech (Ikavian-Jekavian speech of the Posavina subdialect of the Slavonian dialect), which forms the central part of this valuable book, not only for the local history of the Đakovo region but also for the Croatian people / language and territory as a whole. By compiling a dictionary of his local speech variety (which also includes words related to contemporary communication), T. Šalić joined a trend increasingly present among speakers of the Slavonian dialect and scholars for whom it is their mother tongue – a growing awareness of the need for its museum preservation and popularisation. Aware of 2015 data showing that Šokci accounted for only 19.54% of the total population of Vrbica, the author realised that it was high time to save the Vrbica speech, as a witness to the historical, cultural and ethnic identity of the Šokci in that area, from oblivion amid increasingly forceful and inevitable processes of globalisation, Prof. Milica Lukić, PhD, pointed out. On Friday, 24 March 2017, the workshop “No Slacking with Kandžija Osjekanović: Taking Rap Language Out of (Con)Text” was held in the Ceremonial Hall of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek, organised by the Department of Croatian Language of the Matica hrvatska Osijek Branch and the Sub-department of Croatian Language History and Croatian Dialectology of the Department of Croatian Language and Literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek. – Opening of the 3rd Creative Treasury (Wednesday, 26 April 2017, 7 p.m.). On Wednesday, 26 April 2017, the official opening of the 3rd Creative Treasury was held at the Faculty of Economics, bringing together more than one hundred presenters under that year’s central theme “The Chemistry of the Creative Industry”. The 3rd popularisation symposium was opened with welcome addresses by Prof. Vladimir Cini, PhD, Dean of the Faculty of Economics in Osijek, and distinguished patrons. The novel Atanor by Prof. Jasna Horvat, PhD, was discussed by Prof. Milica Lukić, PhD from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek, author of the afterword, Assoc. – Workshop/lecture Cookbook, Speak Wisely So Your Lunch Does Not Burn by Asst. Prof. Silvija Ćurak, PhD, as part of the 3rd Creative Treasury (Thursday, 27 April 2017 at the Faculty of Economics Osijek). A short lecture on the vocabulary of the Slavonian dialect, with emphasis on names for various types of dishes (everyday, festive, occasional), cakes, food preparation, etc. After the theoretical part, participants were asked to identify, based on an image or name, which dish or cake was being presented. At the end of the workshop, they also had an opportunity to taste some traditional Šokac cakes. Watch the video here.

– Interactive and intermedial teaching project “Glagolitic Dinner: Gastronomia Cyrillomethodianska” in which students of the single-major undergraduate study programme in Croatian Language and Literature and professors of the Department of Croatian Language and Literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek (Sub-department of Croatian Language History and Croatian Dialectology) participated. The event was held on Tuesday, 6 June 2017 at 6 p.m. in the Ceremonial Hall of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek (room 60, second floor). The programme featured educational lectures on Croatian Cyrillo-Methodiana, the Croatian language and script(s) of the period, and the philological and artistic connections between tradition and the present, while it was enriched in a special way by the sharing of appropriate spiritual and physical food, moving theatrical and musical performances, a fashion show, and a wealth of interesting accompanying materials created as part of the project “Glagolitic Dinner: Gastronomia Cyrillomethodianska” under the supervision of Prof. Milica Lukić, PhD. – As part of two third-year undergraduate courses in Croatian Language and Literature ‒ the compulsory course Croatian Dialectology and the elective course Kajkavian Dialect, both taught by Prof. Ljiljana Kolenić, PhD, permanent appointment ‒ students participated in field classes on 5 and 6 November 2017. On that occasion, they visited not only their main destination, Sveti Križ Začretje, but also Krapina and Trakošćan, accompanied by Prof. Ljiljana Kolenić, PhD and Tena Babić Sesar, junior researcher ‒ teaching assistant. – On 12 March 2018, first-year students of the single-major study programme in Croatian Language and Literature hosted, during a class in Old Church Slavonic II (Prof. Milica Lukić, PhD, and Vera Blažević Krezić), the author of the novel Az, Croatian writer and Osijek native Jasna Horvat, full professor at the Faculty of Economics in Osijek. – On 12 April 2018, third-year undergraduate students of Croatian Language and Literature, accompanied by Vera Blažević Krezić, PhD, and Asst. Prof. Silvija Ćurak, PhD, visited Ljudevit Gaj Primary School in Osijek (Sarvaš Branch School) as part of the elective course Philosophical and Symbolic Structure of the Glagolitic Script, taught by Prof. Milica Lukić, PhD. – On Saturday, 12 May 2018, a collection of papers dedicated to the life and work of Friar Bernardin Leaković was presented in Bošnjaci. Professors from the Department of Croatian Language and Literature of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek, participated in the presentation programme. The Faculty publication, produced in cooperation with the Municipality of Bošnjaci, was presented by its editors – Prof. Zlata Šundalić, PhD, permanent appointment, and Prof. Ljiljana Kolenić, PhD, permanent appointment – followed by its reviewers – Prof. Milica Lukić, PhD, and Assoc. Prof. Krešimir Šimić, PhD. The academic and professional programme and impressive artistic programme were followed by the ceremonial unveiling of a memorial plaque at 62 Strossmayer Street, at the Babić family house. The memorial plaque was erected in memory of the birthplace of the great Franciscan and distinguished representative of devotional literature of the Slavonian-Franciscan circle in the 18th century. – On 23 November 2018, Croatian Culture Days were held in Sombor, organised by the “Urbani Šokci” Citizens’ Association. On that occasion, the association also celebrated the tenth anniversary of its establishment. Croatian Culture Days began with the International Round Table “Let’s Talk about the Šokci”, held at Sombor City Hall. Prof. Ljiljana Kolenić, PhD, and Asst. Prof. Silvija Ćurak, PhD, participated in the International Round Table with their presentations. In addition to them, lecturers from Hungary and the Republic of Serbia also presented their topics.
